I took an Advanced Topics in Computer Vision for my masters in CS focused in AI. CSC 577. Top-tier American university, 2017. I was the only non-Chinese student in the class. The professor was Chinese. I arrived late for a class by ~ten minutes, walked in, and it was being taught in Mandarin. This debate is insane

"China is just copying our stuff they can't innovate" is exactly the mentality that got the German automotive industry into the complete disaster of a position that it is in now.
There are three elements here: (1) being clueless about Chinese performance in engineering and research in general (2) being clueless about the situation in AI in particular (3) having some racist priors filling you cluelessness.

~70% of people use AI every week. ~70% of people voted to ban data centers where it was on the ballot makes you wonder.

the american electorate is so funny man, the only time they take a break from watching ai generated reelslop of pixar people with fruit heads cheating on each other is to go and vote against data centers.
On Election Day, 44 various data center moratoriums were on the ballot across America. 43 passed.

What explains the comorbidity between being rabidly anti-AI and “Free Palestine” in dating bios? Is there some underlying latent variable?

I used to think this too until AI solved the Erdős conjecture. At this point, arguing that AI is simply synthesizing existing knowledge is like arguing that Einstein never really came up with General Relativity because he was simply synthesizing the work of Riemann, Poincare, etc.
Henry Farrell and Cosma Shalizi argue in the Economist that AI is not an incipient Digital God, but rather a "condensate of human culture": a statistical floor plan of Jacques Barzun's "House of Intellect," animated like an oral bard's repertoire of tropes. (1/4)

Lose a lot of respect for people who flash their credentials as experts in a field to argue for a very contested idea within the field as if it's the official position that all non-experts should defer to.

It's not Qaddafi. It's not al Assad. It's not Maduro. It's not Xi or Putin. It's British police announcing that anyone even attending a protest will be arrested.
Anyone planning to attend a demonstration in support of Palestine Action in the vicinity of the US Embassy on Saturday, 31 October will face arrest as part of a robust policing operation. Expressing support for the group is an offence under the Terrorism Act following its proscription in June 2025, a decision upheld by the Court of Appeal in June 2026. People who have been in research fields develop a felt sense that most "research" (in almost any field that isn't exactingly technical) is research theater, and many superstar careers enjoy star status not because of a unique connection to the truth but because of a unique connection with an audience. No one really has the time or stature to, from a position of objectivity and trust, bring popular researchers to heel. But it will get increasingly hard to hide from serious critique. The machines can do critique now, at the level of depth and rigor previously only possible for the academically deranged. We're going to have to revise a lot of what we "know" about the world that isn't really knowledge but is actually just received popular consensus - like floating voltages without grounding wires. The grounding wires are coming.
Tyler Cowen: 'I am not even sure what to say at this point. We need a radical revaluation of this work, and of the associated policy arguments. More generally, this is only a single step in the story of how AI is going to revise economic science, and indeed past research more generally. As I stress in many of my recent talks, there will be significant gains and losses in status, with the losses often outweighing the gains. I see this as one of those cases.'
