Ukrainian cultural twist to native American who makes history as first female US governor Taken from Ukraine on Instagram As Deb Haaland makes history as the first native American woman governor in U.S. history, representing the Pueblo people, one detail in her archive photos stands out: the vibrant floral scarf around her neck. In North America, it's known as a Kokum scarf. It's actually a traditional Ukrainian floral shawl, adopted by Indigenous peoples over a century ago. In the late 1800s, tens of thousands of Ukrainian families arrived in Canada fleeing poverty and oppression. Among their few belongings were traditional bright, wool-fringed floral shawls known as khustky. Settling in the harsh, unforgiving prairie winters, Ukrainian newcomers lived side by side with local First Nations. These families bonded over survival, trading crafts, food, and textiles. Cree women fell in love with the vivid floral patterns and the warmth of the Ukrainian wool shawls. In oral histories, women recall trading hand-beaded moccasins for these intricate scarves. Over generations, the scarf became an essential staple across Cree, Métis, Anishinaabe, and many other Indigenous nations. They called it the Kokum Scarf - from the Cree word kôhkom (grandmother). It transformed into a revered symbol of matriarchs, elders, and the resilient women holding families together. When russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, indigenous communities across Canada and the U.S. put on their Kokum scarves, sharing photos and messages of solidarity. A century later, a piece of cloth traded on the frontier became a global emblem of unwavering support against oppression.

My last fic had someone who commented on every new chapter and knowing my fic had 1 dedicated reader is genuinely what inspired me to finish the fic. My mantra as I wrote it was "I have to finish this for [dedicated reader username]" EXCITEDLY anticipated new comments from them!
So do people know writers have favorite readers? 🩷 Like that reader you wait for every time you post, every chapter you hope they come by and take time to say something, and when they do it just makes your day. Wonderful people.

AU where Simon AND Ava survives and lives on Erid (and they can talk telepathically due to mutations) I imagine in a healthier, more relaxed environment, Simon and Ava would develop a sibling-like relationship because I. love siblingism <3 #Ironmary w/ a touch of #bloodymary

I want to hop in on this because, by all means, I am considered an "older gen writer." First of all, Fanfic dot net and Wattpad authors used to literally hold chapters hostage until a certain "Like" or "Comment" threshold was met. People still make memes about it to this day, so don't try to play revisionist on this piece of history. Second, a lot of this isn't about statistics. It's about acknowledgement. I wrote a couple decently well-received fanfics as a teen, then went on to pursue writing professionally in college. And I can pretty confidently say I only got this far *because* my fanfics were well-received and people engaged and encouraged me to keep going. Yes, you should write for yourself. Yes, you shouldn't write for views or engagement. And as a writer, I've always written what *I* want to read. But people liking and/or commenting was literally what gave 15-16-year-old me the message that "Hey, I like reading this stuff too! Keep going!" Otherwise, I would've given up and kept my writing in the Google Drive for my own enjoyment and leisure. Besides, it's in our nature to seek approval and like-minded people who enjoy the same things we do. It's the exact same reason why people are sharing fics right now on drives when ao3 is down, is it not? Because we enjoyed these stories, and we want more people to be able to access them so we can talk about them. Big production TV shows literally axe series that don't meet the projected numbers or ratings. It's so easy for fanfic authors to fall into the same trap of "why invest so many resources into something no one will interact with or consume?" Big productions ask for monetary support. All fanfiction authors ask for is a little time out of your day to leave a kudos or comment if you've enjoyed it. We talk all the time about "Supporting Real Artists." That doesn't just pertain to visual art. Literature is art too, even if it's fanfiction. I've been reading fics from these drives/wayback machines during ao3's downtime too, but I have everything listed down so I can go back and properly kudos them when the site is back up to show my appreciation. Because I know I would've appreciated that too when I was a budding young writer.
Can I just say, fanfic authors from pre pandemic and earlier literally Do Not Give A Fuck.™ Younger/newer authors gameify fanfics because "boohoo statistics, boohoo my kudos". Older gens know writing is for the love of the game who the FUCK cares about your stats.

Please read watch/read Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (#ヨコハマ買い出し紀行). It's about an android who runs a coffee shop after the end of the world. The comic, by Hitoshi Ashinano, began seralization in 1994. There were 2 OVAs released in 1998 and 2002. Every version of it is great!
Every piece of post-apocalyptic media has everyone living in filth; there’s corpses strewn about, dirty people, tattered clothes, and everyone lives in an absolute dump. I hate that shit. Humans love being clean, and smelling good, and we love pretty things like flowers and art. I want a realistic post-apocalyptic scenario where people clean shit up and are trying to work back towards what they had before.

The AO3 situation is bringing to the surface a problem we’ve been sweeping under the rug for years: the double standards applied to fanfiction and fanart. An artist can draw whatever they want and post it on social media, benefiting from algorithmic favoritism because their content is quick and easy to consume (because people scroll through social media in a matter of seconds. If something takes even one extra minute of their time, they won’t bother) They can make money, to the point of building an actual career out of commissions (is that legal? Who knows… probably best not to look into it), and receive hundreds of comments or reposts because they deserve it and have worked hard to reach that level (absolutely true, and I agree. But so has anyone else who creates something. I didn’t learn how to sew cosplay costumes or write overnight. It took me just as much time and effort.) A fanfiction writer doesn’t get that. Social media platforms penalize: - External links to websites like AO3. - Walls of text (so no chapters published as posts) - Certain words or phrases. - Posts that don’t get immediately shared or commented on within the first few minutes after publication. (I could go on, but you get the point.) So, if we try to promote our work, we’re forced to commission artwork from artists (for a fee, see above) just to grab people’s attention with content that’s quick and easy to consume. If we dare to ask for comments or any kind of feedback (completely free and anonymous), we get insulted because “well, I don’t want to be OBLIGED to say what I think, or to give a like/kudos/heart/smoke signal or crop circle to that idiot who spent sleepless nights in front of a computer.” And if we ever dared to ask for even a single euro for our work (which nobody does, because we already know how that would end), just imagine the diplomatic incident that would cause. So why bother? And don’t come at me with the joy of creating. I’ve been writing novels on my computer for 25 years, and I’m perfectly happy leaving them right where they are rather than sharing them for free with ungrateful people. This whole situation is bringing one thing into focus: when all is said and done, AI isn’t really the problem.
