In June 1978, the star of Hogan’s Heroes was found beaten to death in his bed in Scottsdale, Arizona, with an electrical cord around his neck. That afternoon, his best friend called the apartment three times. A police lieutenant answered, and the friend never asked why. Bob Crane played Colonel Hogan for six seasons. Off camera, he and his friend John Carpenter filmed themselves having sex with women. In the video below, Crane’s son says his father showed him photos of women from the road when he was 15. Police found smears of blood in Carpenter’s rental car, on the door panel and the window switch. It was type B, the same as Crane’s, a type shared by about 10% of people. There was no DNA testing in 1978, and the county prosecutor refused to file charges. Twelve years later, a cold case detective found an old photo of the car door with what looked like human tissue on it. Carpenter was arrested and went on trial in 1994. The jury found him not guilty. Carpenter died in 1998. Officially, the murder of Colonel Hogan is still unsolved. Crane’s son has named a second suspect: his own stepmother, the only person who gained financially. A friend who called three times and a smear of blood in his car. Was the jury right to let him go?
