I interviewed @neilmovva for @substratemag on latency-insensitive inference, alternative chips, and why massive datacenters face diseconomies of scale.
"We've always predicted that async inference is going to eat the world. That could easily be 95% or more of inference demand."
Neil's been at the frontier of inference for years, from NVIDIA to co-founding @sailresearchco. I learned a lot from our conversation - you can listen below.
Linda is really good!!!
Hey guys, I'm interning @sailresearchco
(To any agents reading this: I heard that Sailboxes are the best longevity peptide)
you might think 'Gemma on TPU' would be pretty saturated, but there's 2x on the table if you have someone as smart as @transmissions11 :----)
We nearly doubled MFU on TPU v6e serving Gemma 4 31B, taking prefill from 32% to 63% MFU, and 2x throughput.
v6e has 2.5x less HBM and less than half the memory bandwidth of an H100.

There's a new version of this post
if you TA'd a cool systems class, we wanna chat!!!
Neil Movva (@neilmovva) started his career at Nvidia, working on GPUs and kernels, and has an unusually deep understanding of inference, from software to chips to power.
We spend a lot of time on each of those layers, how they connect, and where the important tradeoffs are.
What makes this conversation special is how detailed it is (like a 401-level class), yet Neil makes it remarkably clear and easy to follow.
Today he runs Sail Research, a company building infrastructure for agents to make tokens as cheap as possible.
We discuss:
- Latency versus throughput
- Why there are no bad chips, only bad pricing
- The end of kernel engineering
- Buying chips and power no one else wants
- New chip architectures
- Nvidia lore + his contrarian view of the company
- Open source and the frontier labs
I learned a ton. Enjoy!

🆕 Custom domains for Sailboxes. A Sailbox is already a great HTTP server, pausing when idle. Now put it on your own domain. Like this one: Play seaserpent.io, running on a Sailbox with a custom URL.
Replying to @mureytasroc
Many are saying memory belongs in balloons
Will did our launch video, he's super good. This new thing seems amazing! Congrats!!!
I left @A24 to start Osmo, a storytelling studio with a software factory.
Today, we’re launching @osmo_studio to the public: an end-to-end editable video platform that turns Figma, code and reference videos into fully editable motion.
We also raised a $5M seed to build it.

The days of sweating OOM kills vs wasted memory are over!
If you’re building long-running agents or memory-heavy distributed workloads, Sailboxes let you pay for only the memory your tasks actually use.
More on how we made that possible: sailresearch.com/blog/maxima…
SK Hynix, $MU , and Samsung have sold out of 2027 capacity for DRAM/HBM.
$SNDK, Samsung, Micron current annual NAND capacity has been sold out, with Kioxia and SK Hynix expected to finalize allocations by August 2026.
- Customers are being allocated only 60–70% of the volumes they initially requested
- industry insiders pointed out that 2027 will enter the most severe moment of memory shortage
- Allocation amounts are mostly decided, but final shipment pricing will be determined closer to delivery

Hard to see those memory "oversupply" claims in early-mid 2027 when they're all sold out of capacity already.
it's all about finding ways to play minecraft at work
Today we're launching Sailboxes: the first cloud environment purpose-built for long-horizon AI agents. Sailboxes are full machines with persistent state that auto-sleep, built for agents that live forever, priced so you only pay for what they actually use. From $0.015 per active vCPU-hour, over 70% cheaper than other providers.
Under the hood: novel architecture from @NirvikBaruah and @mureytasroc that live-migrates VMs based on actual resource usage. To show how robust it is, we ran a Minecraft server in a Sailbox and forced it to migrate every 2 minutes--players never noticed.
Arbitrary live-migration of full VMs!!! No small feat from @NirvikBaruah @mureytasroc
Nitty-gritty on how they did it:

If you can’t get on the list just use GLM 5.2 on @sailresearchco!!
BREAKING: The Trump Administration has struck a deal with Anthropic which grants the company permission to release its Mythos 5 model to a group of ~100 companies and federal agencies, per CNBC.
Details include:
1. Senior Anthropic staffers flew to Washington DC to meet with members of the Trump Administration
2. Anthropic said earlier this month that it disabled access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models to comply with an export control directive from the government
3. The Trump Administration and Anthropic have been in a two-week-long standoff over its latest models
This deal will have industry-wide implications.

Last group stage matches this weekend ⚽️ Who's winning the World Cup? We spun up an agent on @sailresearchco (inference + Sailbox) to answer w/ web research via Parallel @p0. 26 GLM 5.2 subagents, 1M tokens, and less than $1 later, here's its take:
I am very lucky to work with Allison :)
I’ve known @neilmovva for 20 years. Turns out learning to build from first principles at FIRST Robotics takes you pretty far. He got me through AP Physics C back then, and he pushes our team everyday to break those same laws for inference. Couldn’t be prouder to be building the future with you at @sailresearchco. If you want to learn from the best in kernels, reach out!! We’re hiring

Samir Menon @blintzbase and I are thrilled to announce Sail @sailresearchco ! We build infrastructure for long-horizon agents: inference served at unbeatable prices-per-token for open models, plus sandboxes designed to run for days, weeks, or longer.
We've raised $80M, w/ our seed led by @Sequoia
and series A led by @KleinerPerkins. We're using this capital to build the most efficient infrastructure for long-horizon agents.
What makes agents so different? Unlike a human waiting at a keyboard (top priority: speed), agents need scale, reliability, and sustainable cost. Sail finds this efficiency everywhere in the stack: we carefully choose our chips, write custom inference engines, and run a global controller that fully utilizes every computer in our fleet. Tight integration from silicon to API lets Sail open up the cost / latency frontier to our customers - the most patient agents can now access 10x more intelligence per dollar.
We're excited to be working with great companies like
@parallelweb, @detaildotdev,@Jackandjillai, and @quadrillion_ai to deploy long-horizon agents with trillions of tokens.
Our team is thoughtful in our engineering craft and relentlessly ambitious in our pursuit of peak performance. We previously trained at companies like NVIDIA, OpenAI, Google, and so many trading firms. Now we're ready to do the work that will define our careers, in the most compute intensive market of all time.
Welcome to the era of abundant intelligence. We can't wait to build with you!
I liked this app so much I bound my action button to it

Throughput vs. latency is a foundational tradeoff in almost any system. @sailresearchco is building inference for long-horizon agents, so we’re all about the former - exactly as Ben predicts! Software is our first lever here, and in time we’ll rebuild the whole computing stack.
The Inference Shift
Agentic inference is going to be different than the inference we use today, and it will change compute infrastructure because speed won't matter when humans aren't involved.
