A NEW CONSTITUTIONAL SETTLEMENT
What Nigeria requires is not another adjustment to an excessively centralised system, but a new constitutional settlement.
Such a settlement should clearly define the powers of the constituent units and the federal centre, establish mechanisms for cooperation among the units, protect regional autonomy and provide a democratic process through which the peoples of Nigeria can determine the structure of their common country.
The objective is a federation in which every constituent nation has sufficient political and economic space to develop, while the country retains institutions capable of advancing shared interests.
THE FUTURE OF NIGERIA
At 66, the most important question is not simply how long Nigeria has existed in its present form. It is whether the structure of the country provides a sustainable foundation for its many peoples to prosper together.
Think Yorùbá First believes that Nigeria can remain one country while becoming a fundamentally different federation.
A country where autonomous nations govern themselves.
A country where communities have greater responsibility for their own development and security.
A country where cultural identities are protected.
A country where the federal centre exists to serve common interests.
A country where cooperation is chosen because it produces mutual benefit.
This is the constitutional direction that can give practical meaning to federalism, self-government, cultural preservation and shared prosperity.
The path forward is a restructured Nigeria: a United States of Nigeria, built on autonomous constituent nations working together for the common good.
