ALT Black-and-white Halloween 1980 cover of Winds of Change, an alternative newspaper from Yolo County, California, illustrated by R. Crumb. Beneath the elaborate Gothic masthead and a pile of discarded chemical containers, a skeletal farmer stands in a cultivated field holding a tattered flag and a long tool, while a small bat-winged creature overhead pours a stream into a swirling dark cloud. Intricate pen-and-ink hatching, sweeping textures, and grotesque figures give the ecological nightmare a darkly humorous quality.
