We assessed forest recovery following 24 years of experimental N deposition inputs, focusing on soil C and associated microbial activities, and found that the C that had built up under high N deposition was no longer present in the system 5 years after treatment termination.

We found that the organic horizon carbon that accumulated under experimental nitrogen deposition inputs was rapidly lost in recovery following the termination of the N inputs in 2017 and that these losses co-occur with increases in lignin-modifying enzyme activity in recovery.
