🚨This is an invaluable resource for many a journalist and researcher - utterly non partisan but a source for transparency about money in politics now under financial threat
SCOOP: OpenSecrets, the nonpartisan money-in-politics research nonprofit, laid off 10 employees yesterday due to financial difficulties. Much of the research team were among the casualties, which constituted around a third of the group’s total headcount. politico.com/newsletters/pla…

Aotearoa, I know many of us are distracted thinking about Trump today. But please don't give our own shitty government exactly what they want, by letting them introduce the worst breach of Te Tiriti in 100 years without us making noise about it. We won't let them win.
No wonder the government is desperate to get rid of the Waitangi Tribunal. Their latest report on the Treaty Principles Bill is absolutely excoriating. It also reveals that the government claims mere consultation with Māori is a ‘novel reinterpretation of the Treaty’ - wtf.

Curiosity has always been deeply undervalued as a professional skill, AI is attempting its systematic extermination.

This is so incredibly depressing. If I was relying on AI there was so much stuff I wouldn't have learned, and many weird holes I wouldn't have gone down or learned about that ended up paying off later in my career.
Welcome to the era where we use massive computational power to skim other folk’s ideas because we’re too busy to read another person’s words. AI summarization is now active in Google Scholar. When we use AI to read for us, what do we gain? What do we lose?

Remember when everyone swore they were just looking for tunnels and hostages? Remember when they said we were hysterical I mean bigots for claiming they would absolutely ethnically cleanse and annex Gaza? Remember when every red line was crossed with total impunity?

Scathing statement from Bernie Sanders on the election results “It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them…”

It's important NOT to overstate the role of Russian interference efforts on social media on the US election. We've tracked two Russia-linked operations for months - and they've been putting out lots of content. But most of their fakes consistently failed to get traction...

I cannot fathom the feeling of the women who came forward about their sexual assault at the hands of Trump. Seeing millions of people vote for their abuser. My heart absolutely breaks for these women. I believe you, and I am so sorry.

It wasn't that long ago that Luxon was saying unemployment needs to increase to combat inflation. He simultaneously believes that his preferred economic system requires a class of unemployed people *and* that those people should be punished for being unemployed. Gross man.
My message to those facing benefit sanctions: Get a resume, show up for the job interview, check in with your case manager, and your fellow New Zealander will support you on a pathway to work. You have an obligation to look for work and to participate in work, and if you don't, we'll sanction your benefits.

The government’s Treaty Principles Bill undermines the last 50 years of progress we have made as a country to recognize and compensate for past breaches of the Treaty and restore the relationship between Māori and the Crown. It’s a major leap backwards.

Unemployment data out today - it rose to 4.8%. Many people might be trying to tell you that's better than expected - and so things are okay. A closer look at the data shows otherwise. There are 29,000 more people unemployed since this government took office. A 🧵

Any time someone is like "AI isn't anti-labor" I'm just going to point them at this tweet in which the head of an AI company volunteers his technology as the ultimate scab.
incredible tweet from ceo of perplexity, the AI search engine that has ticked off a number of publications, for a few reasons 1. reporters already not happy w/ them 2. NYT (and others) recently served them with a C&D 3. they are supposedly on a charm offensive with the press

I’m encouraged to hear that every major corporation is now in favor of the workers seizing the means of production and an eradication of the prison industrial complex. Big news if true!
Replying to @tmorello
Big fan of RATM as a kid in the 90s, but then I realized they have the same politics as every major corporation and I grew passed them
