"Another approach to conservation is needed, one that takes seriously our economic system’s structural pressures, violent socio-ecological realities, cascading extinctions and increasingly authoritarian politics"
This is what we wrote 5 years ago.

Toward a planetary ethnography? From “frictions” to “tensions” in understanding post-truth capitalist power
Argues it is time for anthropology to reclaim truth and speak it to capitalist power more forcefully. And shows how we can do so

"In case it was not clear already: we need a conservation revolution! A call and proposal for a convivial alternative" with Bram Büscher.
As the warnings and discourses become stronger and more explicit, we see actors scrambling to come to terms with this new reality and asking how to move forward. With respect to the global biodiversity crisis, this is well reflected in the conservation community. Indeed, over the last years we have seen the rise of several radical proposals for reforming conservation, culminating in the Kunming-Montreal ‘30x30’ biodiversity framework. In this presentation, Bram Büscher reflects on and evaluates these conservation proposals and the Kunming-Montreal framework. He argues that while they hold some seeds for radical change they are far from sufficient. Building on these reflections, he proposes an alternative vision under the banner of ‘convivial conservation’.

Another even year, another apocalyptic report by @WWF
But when push comes to shove, WWF consistently avoids any language that challenges vested power structures & the sanctity of growth
Instead of more apocalyptic reports, we need a conservation revolution!
🚨 #BREAKING! Code red for nature: Species population numbers have plunged by 73% on average since 1970.
Ecosystems are near collapse & we're close to tipping points leading to irreversible impacts. URGENT action is needed.
🗣RT to call on leaders to #ActForOurPlanet. #LPR2024
Unless WWF and the rest of mainstream conservation comes clean as a counter-hegemonic force and shifts alliances from business-as-usual to those who challenge vested power, their apocalyptic warnings will continue to sound hollow and be ignored.
Indeed - they do/are already.
Even this report only hints at vested power in the most circumspect way in a box on page 46 (as @ShelbyMatevich points out!).
So if we actually want structural change, we need to support alternatives like @convivconserv, @ICCAConsortium and all others who challenge vested power.

New paper alert! @brambuscher explores why (neo)protectionism persists in conservation, highlighting its emotional-institutional power despite critiques, and how this further fuels an enduring ‘great conservation tragedy’.
