This is the best data I've seen on the subject and unfortunately it's over 20 years old. Zagorsky 2007 (data is 2004)

It's bizarre how many people are unable to understand that this is an ambiguous expression and there is not a universal convention for evaluating it. If you think there's an objective answer, you're stupid. Also, it's 1.

I would agree to a plan to phase out social security over the next 25 years, even knowing that it means the system will end right at the moment when I would start drawing a check. If that means that my kids and grandchildren aren’t subjected to this scam for their entire lives, I’m willing to take that hit. I just can’t for the life of me understand or relate to the older people who don’t feel that way and wouldn’t be willing to make the sacrifice for the sake of their descendants. Totally foreign mentality to me. I truly find it baffling. Setting my kids up for the future is like one of the only things I care about anymore.

There can't be much overlap in people smart enough to orchestrate this but stupid enough to do it.
1. Declare a “valuable” major (get loans) 2. Complete requirements for “worthless” major (still get loans) 3. Switch major declaration in last semester. 👍💵

"Haha silly MAGA. You don't even understand. We don't even use these degrees for work! We go $200,000 into debt on your dime for the love of it."
Sorry for getting on a soapbox and posting about something non-sports, but this is monumentally absurd. Not everyone who majors in a subject goes on to work in that subject. But I can guarantee that folks who do study these fields have their lives enriched by the experience.

We should still have the death penalty because it's right thing to do. It's not really about cost.
The death penalty is significantly more expensive than life in prison.

Working requires commuting, meals, sleep, housing, r&r, etc. My employer should pay for all of these things, obviously. It could be cumbersome to have them manage it for me though, so they should just give me currency to pay for those those as I need.
I actually think companies should be required to pay for commute time. Companies offload the cost of so many negatives in modern society that wind up as commute time. Do you think companies would tolerate blue city crime policies if their workforce's avoidance had a price tag?

How do people who have jobs to be activists and think about this type of thing say such asinine things. Obviously, if there were no downsides to using fossil fuels, we wouldn't want to reduce our use of them because it would make energy more expensive for no benefit.
What I don't get about climate change deniers is why they're opposed the green transition. Say they're right and its a hoax. We still end up with a high-tech industrial revolution, more trees in urban centres, cooling systems, public transport, more EVs! Why is that bad?

Mostly, jobs require a college degree as a crude attempt to filter out stupid, illiterate, or innumerate people. A high school diploma no longer serves this purpose and directly testing candidates is tricky due to Griggs v. Duke.
Boomer admins really think 19 year olds trying to get into YC or Harvard Law care about their “Education™”. College/grades have become a Darwinian-esque convexity optimization problem. Maximum grade for minimum # of hours studied. You are effectively punished for *not cheating*. At what point do we stop the LARP that college is about academics and let the kids just drink and network?

Inferior cultures have worse morals. That's the point. You can't build or maintain a modern civilization if punctuality isn't valued.
yall are getting so mad at bri for this but there are countless studies and articles and history books you could read that very clearly discuss punctuality as a primarily western value that half the world doesn’t see as some vital pillar of friendship and morality! it’s cultural!

Heroin indeed unambiguously benefits heroin users. Yes, heroin can cause addiction, but the revealed preference of heroin users is to have heroin, not freedom from addiction. You can voluntarily stop using heroin. (Both heroin & rent control create local optima)
Rent control is indeed unambiguously benefits tenants in rent controlled units. Yes, units can fall into disrepair but the revealed preference of those stabilized tenants is to have cheap rent not a nicer place. You can voluntarily leave a rent controlled unit. (1/2)

What do you pick if you get to push the button for your own kid?
I see a lot of people saying that the blue button is collectivist nonsense. But if you press red, your kid dies. You're safe, though. You got that calculated out right.

You are alone in a room. You are free to leave and go home. In 1 minute, the room will be filled with toxic gas and you'll die. However if a majority of people in this situation stay, there will be no toxic gas. Do you remain in the room or leave?
Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

People like this are more evil than any rapist or murderer. The self-righteousness coupled with the anti-civilizational viewpoint is beyond disgusting. Imagine calling for people to make it easier to victimize them to protect criminals. This is the pinnacle of evil.
This post is an excellent litmus test for understanding of just war theory. Despite the fact that I can see how effective this would be, I must oppose it because the damage it would do to my enemy (who bashes in my mailbox) would far outweigh the good of saving my mailbox. Its disproportionality is opposed by our duty in charity (and even justice) to watch out even for the good of our enemies. (Yes, by the way, I have had my mailbox bashed in by random vandals.)

"Men are still socialized, by and large, for a world that no longer exists. They're not taught domestic skills and emotional intelligence the way women are." This is the dumbest thing I've read lately, and I've been seeing a lot of flat earther nonsense.

A general shithead registry would be better. Most murderers have a long history of burglary, assault, DUIs, larceny, etc before they eventually kill someone.
Murder registry is a good idea from Elon. People should know if they are close to a murderer so proper precautions can be taken.
