Sorry to disagree with many mutuals, but the idea that making books more boyish will make boys more bookish reminds me of similar efforts to get girls into video games by changing the protagonists or stories. There may be changes on the margins but the pattern will likely persist

We will all be learning in coming weeks & months, that most human-made software: ▫️ Was really slow ▫️ Had many security vulnerabilities ▫️ Was under-specified and incorrect AI will rewrite it all. Many times. It will make it fast, cost-efficient, and secure. It will think about failure modes we couldn't wrap our heads around. It will prove, formally verify, load test, harden. It will turn memory-unsafe foundations into robust, optimized ones. If you ask, it'll thoroughly document it, teach you about it, make diagrams, animations, and slide decks. In many ways, we are witnessing the true birth of software engineering.

Republicans are going to have a terrible night, and the simple reason why is that Trump has put up perhaps the worst *performance* this term of any president in a century or more. Remember that he entered with an actual mandate: the House and Senate, a popular vote victory and a swing-state sweep, and 6-3 Supreme Court. Democrats were afraid enough to vote for mild but real immigration restrictionist legislation in the Laken Riley Act. Everyone wondered how far the "Vibe Shift" would go. Trump managed to turn that into essentially zero durable wins whatsoever. He personally *hates* the very idea of legislation, the notion that he would have to spend time going back and forth with Congress, learning details and making compromises. So he simply didn't do it! He didn't make a compelling case for abolishing the filibuster. He didn't try communicating clearly to the public in support of popular bills to get to 60 votes. He just decided not to do it at all. So they passed an unpopular tax cut, some funding for ICE, and a sop to the crypto industry, and that was basically it. Least productive Congress in decades, due to the tastes of one man. Trump adopted one of the worst macro policies we've ever had: high deficits, high tariffs, and attacks on central bank independence. We managed to pay higher interest rates while still having high trade deficits AND weakening the dollar. Just a total failure. On immigration, perhaps THE signature issue, Trump essentially min-maxxed effectiveness and backlash. Instead of trying to leverage the political moment for new laws and a self-deportation agenda (that is, walling off the economy to remove the benefit of irregular presence in the US), he opted for a maximally aggressive approach. The administration spent attention, funds, legal manpower on stunts like deporting random people to Salvadoran prisons with essentially no due process. ICE and Border Patrol were encouraged to be aggressive and confrontational, which helped contribute to the shooting deaths of American protestors. It turns out, that's extremely unpopular! What about the approach of going after employers? The obvious vector? Trump hated that idea! He repeatedly has said he doesn't want to target businesses (especially farms) that use large amounts of illegal labor. This is just an incomprehensible position. Instead of charging a few dozen businessmen and removing the incentive for millions of illegal workers to be here, you arrest people off the street one by one at the cost of thousands of dollars in manpower per each, while their crying wives and kids post TikToks about it. Upshot on immigration: electoral strength turned into a crippling electoral weakness in exchange for deporting maybe 6% of the illegally present population. The tariffs were a total shitshow. Embarrassing rollout, no underlying theory of action at all. No targeted focus on key industries. Our country tariffed products we can't grow. We tariffed *inputs* of our own valuable exports. The schemes and amounts changed constantly, sending the stock market reeling and presenting scenes of chaos to the world. Trump's messaging throughout has been generationally bad. While facing nearly 2:1 unpopularity, he spends his days posting AI slop, saying he'll rename New Mexico or invade allies, among other bizarre remarks. He brags about a ballroom and a pool repainting while gas hits records. At no point has he ever attempted any kind of message discipline. Then there are the deeply unpopular attacks on rule of law, his "game-recognize-game" pardons for all manner of scammers and criminals, the crypto schemes that he and his family engage in, the evilly conceived and embarrassingly executed legal attacks on Comey, Jerome Powell, and others. With his monthslong stand on NOT releasing the Epstein files, he became maybe the first president ever to stake out a 99-1 issue on the 1% side. That's not even getting into Iran, DOGE, his candidate recruitment choices, or countless other things. Simply put: Trump has managed to royally screw up virtually every single facet of his presidency. It's been undeniable, voters have noticed, and there's really no escape from it. This is what the GOP base chose in early 2024, and this is the world they're living with now. Where they handed the reins of history to a fat, vain, washed-up old man and let him drive.

Biggest news in housing rn. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are making the assumption that Mamdani’s RGB will extend the rent freeze for as long as he’s in office—which seems like a pretty reasonable assumption to me. Catastrophe. SCOTUS must step in.

I posted a story about an Upper East Side tenant accused of harassing her neighbors. She also owes $88,000 in back rent on a $1,775 rent-stabilized apartment she'll likely never have to leave. Meanwhile, an owner who knocks on her door demanding rent risks a harassment complaint. Tenant harassment can now carry up to 7 years in prison. Most of the responses were what you'd expect. Outrage at a broken system that lets some people go years without paying rent while paying tenants carry the cost. And of course the usual DSA crowd showed up to say good, screw the landlord. But her behavior is systemically protected and encouraged by our own government. It's no different from fare evasion or petty theft, which the left instantly chalks up to need instead of criminal behavior. Maybe to virtue signal. Who knows. Don't believe me? Look at the video the mayor posted a few days ago. Start with the story itself, which makes no sense. The landlord was supposedly stealing mail, which is a federal crime. Repairs weren't being made,( a common claim delay tactic often used in housing court to delay or prevent non payment proceedings.) You know what pays for repairs? The $60,000 in rent that wasn't being paid. The tenant was also supposedly being charged rent "illegally," yet the city covered the full balance with a One Shot Deal. If it were an illegal overcharge, the city would not have paid it.$63,000 is multiple years of not a single cent of rent being paid. Many of us have faced hardship. Many have had to skip a payment or two. But years? And not a cent? Come on. Try not paying your taxes for years. The broader point is this. The mayor, the face of city government, went on camera and read what amounts to creative writing. A tenant owed years of rent, never had to move, never had to pay, and the government appears to have covered the entire debt. Then gave a housing voucher to cover future rent. Somehow the landlord is still the villain for even collecting rent at all. And we act like this is normal, then wonder why thousands of tenants stopped paying rent after COVID and faced no consequences while other renters and taxpayers in the city continue to subsidize willful scofflaws.

wild ruling out of Seattle that @PHLCouncil needs to read. a builder put $39M into 254 low-income apartments locked at 60% AMI for 30 years. from 2015 to 2018 it worked, collecting ~94% of rent. then Seattle stacked on "tenant protections": banned criminal background checks, banned winter evictions, required 180 days notice for rent hikes + 3 months relocation pay, and forced the owner to let unscreened roommates move in and take over leases. result: rent collections dropped from 93.9% to 44.1%!!! the building lost nearly $6M through 2023 ($2.7M in 2023 alone) and is now appraised as functionally worthless. the city bankrupted actual affordable housing lol. the appeals court just ruled the owner can sue Seattle for an unconstitutional taking. when you strip a landlord's right to screen, collect rent or remove non-paying tenants, it's not "regulation" anymore, you took the building…. Philly has half these laws already 🙄 courts.wa.gov/opinions/pdf/8…
