Plenty of laughs, candid conversations, and plenty to think about.
A big thank you to our incredible panellists, Mark Kahn, Maelis Carraro and Francisco Jardim, for joining David Saunders and Clara Colina for an insightful discussion on the state of agtech investment in emerging markets.
The conversation explored how agtech is evolving across Africa, Latin America and Asia, and tackled four questions shaping the sector’s future:
🍃 Emerging market trajectories: Each region is following a distinct growth path. India benefits from a 30-year head start and domestic fund-of-funds; Africa is navigating 54 fragmented markets where less than 1% of VC capital reaches early-stage founders; and LatAm is building on decades of productivity growth while moving beyond copy-pasted consumer playbooks.
1/
🍃 Physical infrastructure vs pure SaaS: Standalone SaaS models are facing challenges, while startups combining digital and AI capabilities with physical infrastructure, from warehouses and processing hubs to agrovet networks, are showing greater potential.
3/
🍃 Is AI overrated or underrated? AI may be overrated as a standalone software wrapper, but underrated as an enabler when combined with physical assets, bioinformatics and biological R&D, and financial risk modelling.

During the first six months of 2026, African ventures raised $3.3 billion in funding, marking the strongest mid-year performance in a decade. But behind this figure is a highly concentrated funding landscape.
In our newly released H1 2026 Venture Pulse, we look at the funding trends, emerging patterns, and market dynamics shaping the African tech ecosystem so far this year.
Here are some of the key highlights:
⚖️ Whilst women-founded and mixed-gender teams secured 22% of all deals, they absorbed only 1.9% of the total funding value.
🏢 50% of all H1 2026 funding value was raised by entities mainly incorporated outside of Africa.
Whether you are sourcing deal flow, raising capital, or analysing the market, download the full H1 2026 Venture Pulse to access the data behind these trends.
Thank you to everyone who contributed their data and insights to help us build this baseline of Africa's venture landscape!

Capital in ClimateTech is concentrated at the very top: the top 20 companies have raised 60% of all funding since 2016, and the top 10 alone have raised as much as the rest of the sector put together.
