This is demonstrably false, and misinforms the public about crime, safety, and the crisis in our city’s jails.
More than 80 percent of people in jail on Rikers Island have not even been convicted. They are legally innocent. Some are also jailed for technical parole violations.
"If you are on Rikers right now, you didn't steal an apple. ... If you are on Rikers, you did something really bad," @NYCMayor says during crime presser, referring to dramatic reduction in number of detainees.
