Rewatching this final scene of Star Trek: The Next Generation today hurts. The world in which this show existed feels long gone. Every week we watched on “network TV” a strong and virtuous male leader be celebrated. We grappled with real philosophical questions without cynicism. We laughed without being “irony poisoned.” We celebrated men and women working together in complementary collaboration—not in zero-sum competition. That world feels gone, but it doesn’t have to be. Most of us still hold these values. We can tell stories like this again.

Rae Dawn is a menchette. This is just further proof.
Before Hollywood, I was living in a van in Hawaii and waiting tables at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. One day, the incredible Rae Dawn Chong walked into the restaurant, and naturally, I went up to her table and said, “Hey, you’re a movie star! What are you doing here?” She asked if I could act, and I said, “Fuck yeah, put me in your movie!” She asked for my phone number. The only problem was I didn’t have one. So I gave her my buddy Mike’s number instead. A couple days later, Mike casually mentions, “Oh, by the way, someone called you.” ARE YOU KIDDING ME, MIKE?! I called her back, and sure enough, she was serious. I drove over to pick up the script, went back to Mike’s house, and read all 120 pages three times in a row. First script I’d ever read. My character's name was Devon, and I remember thinking, “Sweet! I could totally play a Devon!” I showed up to the audition with every line and inflection mapped out in pencil. Rae told me I could act and offered me the part. I asked if we were shooting in Hawaii. Nope. Los Angeles. I had about $60 to my name, a bag of clothes, and some rollerblades. Then Rae told me they'd fly me out. And I remember thinking right then and there, my life just changed forever. I'm going to be an actor. That little movie was Cursed Part 3, a low-budget horror comedy that opened the door to Hollywood for me. I'll forever be grateful to Rae for taking a chance on a kid working at a shrimp restaurant. Everybody starts somewhere, and this is where it all began for me.

Magnificent. Listen to this.
At this moment in history, when France is at risk of disappearing, my friend @Erga3x and I decided to perform a 19th-century hymn to Saint Joan of Arc, who led French troops during the Hundred Years’ War and reclaimed the throne.⚜️ More than six centuries after her trafic death, Joan remains a symbol of courage and love for one’s country. She reminds us that even when everything seems lost, a single person driven by faith and determination can awaken an entire nation. (Find the link to our folk music channel in the description.)

Thanks for asking, Lily. Someone should, but I'm pretty sure we already know the answer.

@RepGoodlander, are you OK with this? Never mind, you both were in the "Seditious 6" video.

Friends, some critics say that the phrase “the pursuit of happiness” in the Declaration of Independence indicates that America was founded on individual desire, not the common good. But Jefferson was classically educated, and he would have known that happiness, in the true sense, is bound up with virtue. That’s the opening argument of Aristotle’s “Nicomachean Ethics”: All of us desire happiness, and happiness is the activity of the soul in accord with virtue. Therefore, to speak of “the pursuit of happiness” isn’t to give in to Hobbesian subjectivism; it’s to open the soul to the virtuous pursuit of beatitude. And it’s a phrase worth reclaiming!

These seem like very good questions.
Replying to @WMUR9
I just wish someone at WMUR would ask Maggie Goodlander 1. How did she get commissioned in the Navy (hint she didn’t go to the academy, didn’t complete NROTC, and never went to Officer Candidate School)? 2. How did she get classified as a Naval Intelligence officer (Hint - she has no record of attending the Naval officer Intelligence School) 3. What Inuelligence unit in the Navy was she assigned to and what intelligence work did she actually do (hint she has never revealed this to anyone in media and it’s not on her resume)? Rep Goodlander talks about being a veteran more than ANYONE I know - and yet we know NOTHING about her military record. We do know she is politically connected. Did she use her connections to get a direct commission? Did she skip Intelligence School? Did she ever do ANY intelligence work in Navy? Wake up WMUR. Wake up @AdamSextonWMUR Ask some questions!

America was and is an enlightenment Protestant deist project put forward by biblical skeptics, who nonetheless were believers in the possibility of founding a covenential nation modeled on the Biblical Israelites and their journey. That may be too distant or complicated for some people to absorb, but that’s the story that Americans have lived out ever since. That America is both a radical Western European Protestant project and also was very deliberately NOT founded as a Christian or sectarian nation also seems hard for many people to understand. But it’s true. Thats why the founding DNA of the country includes Protestant Christianity, Judaism, the Enlightenment and the experiences and art of African slaves. Its also why America attracts a kind of impassioned non-comprehension from critics on both the left and the right who want it to fit neatly into their boxes, whether particularist or universal, when it is in fact unlike any other nation on earth. There is only one America. Its up to you to understand how and why it was made, the music of its poetry and speech, and the human freedoms that it stands for. countyhighway.com/subscribe

Good words from a good imam.
A Statement of Conscience on October 7 I will not start by saying ‘as a Muslim’ or ‘as an imam’, but as a human being. On October 7, over 1,200 innocent people were killed in a single day. Families were shot in their homes. Young people out dancing were hunted across open fields. Over 250 people, including children and the elderly, were dragged into Gaza as hostages. I think of a mother hiding in a safe room with her baby’s mouth covered. I think of a father listening as the line went quiet. I think of families who waited month after month for someone to come home, only to receive a coffin. I didn’t need my faith to recognize the evil of what happened. My heart told me first. But I’m a Muslim and an imam, and I owe the world one honest sentence: what was done that day was a crime against God. God teaches that whoever kills one innocent soul, it is as if he had killed all humanity. This day has an author: Yahya Sinwar. He planned it, ordered it, and knew what would follow. Every death of that day and war he started rests on him and Hamas leaders who sat in tunnels and foreign hotels and called slaughter a victory. It rests on every Palestinian leader who cheered, excused, handed out sweets, or said nothing. They chose this. They own it. But Sinwar did not invent himself. He was the fruit of a tree planted almost a century ago by the Muslim Brotherhood. Hamas named itself in its founding charter as the Brotherhood’s branch in Palestine. The Brotherhood’s poison is slow. It arrives through study circles, youth camps, charity boxes, and kind words to lonely young men. Drop by drop, it teaches him that his religion is a political party, his neighbour is his enemy, the Jew is the cause of his sorrow, and God is pleased by rage. By the time the gun arrives, the soul is already taken. I have seen this poison in mosques where sermons became rallies and young men could recite slogans but not sit still for a verse on mercy. Every people that let the Brotherhood in has paid in blood and ruined generations. It has never built anything it did not first set on fire. Behind Hamas stands another hand: the IRGC. It was the IRGC’s money, weapons, and training that turned a hateful idea into an army. One calls itself Sunni and the other Shia, and they may curse each other’s creeds, but they are united in what they worship. It is not God. It is power. The same IRGC that armed the killers of October 7 shoots Iranian girls for showing their hair, hangs young men for asking to be free, and has left graves from Tehran to Damascus to Beirut. They speak in God’s name. So did Pharaoh speak in the name of heaven. So let me say this clearly. Hamas and the IRGC are not merely enemies of Islam. That would be too small a charge, as if their crime were only against us. They are enemies of God. God is the Giver of life, yet they deal in death. God calls Himself the Most Merciful, yet they have made cruelty a sacrament. God honoured the children of Adam, yet they look at a child and see a target or a shield. To murder what God created and sign His name to it is the oldest blasphemy. And we Muslims have been too quiet. Some of us were afraid. Some told ourselves it was not our business. Some, God forgive them, felt something other than horror that morning and never confessed it. Silence was the soil this poison grew in. I will not add to it. So on this anniversary, let us say plainly what our scripture already says. The Jews are not our enemies. They are our cousins in Abraham, and their dead were created by the same God who created us. Today belongs to them: the murdered, the hostages, and families who still set a place at the table. To them I say: I am sorry for what was done to you by men who used the words of my prayers. You’re not alone in your grief or remembrance. The enemies of God are those who murder in His name. We know their names. It is time we said them from our own pulpits, in our own voices, before they speak for us again. Imam Tawhidi

13th century Italian city terrorized by a wolf. Kills not just livestock but humans too. St Francis decides his help is needed. Goes to meet the wolf. Finds him, sees fangs, gets charged. "Come hither, Brother Wolf; I command thee, in the name of Christ, neither to harm me nor anybody else.” Wolf slows. Comes to Francis' feet. Lays down. Francis offers deal: wolf must vow never to eat man or livestock; in return the Gubians will feed him. Wolf nods. Francis asks the wolf to promise. Wolf places his paw in Francis' extended hand and they shake on it. Both enter the city and Francis informs the residents of the agreement. Wolf lives its final years in Gubio. Citizens feed him, grow to like him, and mourn his death when it comes. Church of St Francis of the Peace is built on the site where the wolf was buried. Many years later, in 1872, renovations are being made and the crews find a very old skeleton of a large wolf! Ora pro nobis, St Francis, friend to animals!
