Don’t believe Minister Quinn. He keeps saying OSAP has been cut off because of these “very serious allegations”. He’s known about this since 2023. He did nothing. He allowed hundreds of millions to flow to a handful of private colleges who’ve now been referred to the OPP for potential fraud. Restore OSAP. Reverse the grant cuts. Resign. #onpoli

This is a fantastic piece in today’s @globeandmail by @arthurhlam on the failures of “branch plant” industrial policy in Canada. Entire article is worth reading but a few call-outs below. Glad we’re finally having this debate! - - - “Stelco and Stellantis are just two examples of multinationals accused of breaking their Canadian commitments to pursue their own financial interests. This trend undermines a central tenet of the federal government’s approach to jobs and economic development: branch-plant economics, where Canada hosts factories and offices owned by foreign-headquartered corporations.” “Canadians should be upset not only that these multinationals took Canadians’ hard-earned taxpayer dollars and enriched their foreign shareholders, but that governments encouraged this unsustainable model of economic development.” “We should not subsidize companies that put foreign shareholders and governments ahead of their commitments to Canadian communities, businesses and workers. Canadian-owned companies tend to have a deeper stake in how this country turns out, and our industrial policy should reflect that.”
Stelco and Stellantis show the limits of branch-plant economics. Public support should go to firms that commit to lasting jobs, ownership, and benefits in Canada. Glad to participate in this public conversation. See my new @globeandmail op-ed here: theglobeandmail.com/business…

Good indepth story here by @aidenchamandy The facts: Unprecedented highs for hallway health care since 2018. Even after adjusting for population growth. The ford government has failed on health care. Patients don’t need to wait like this. They just need care. It is time for real solutions: leefairclough.ca/policy/heal…

Today, I launched, Health Care for All, a plan to rebuild our publicly funded health system that Ford’s PCs have spent 8 years tearing down. It fixes what’s broken now. · supporting seniors age at home · proactively keeping people healthy · a primary team for every Ontarian · expanded public coverage for mental health, starting with youth · properly supporting hospitals, and ending overcharging by private providers. And it replaces the PC’s short-sighted approach with a forward-thinking commitment to ensure our health system remains universal and is ready for generations to come. Let’s rebuild publicly funded health care together. leefairclough.ca/en-ca/campa…

Before entering politics, I spent 27 years working in healthcare. I know firsthand the dedication healthcare workers bring to their jobs, the difference they make in people’s lives, and how much Ontario depends on a strong, well- supported healthcare system. That’s why the endorsements of these healthcare professionals and former Ontario Ministers of Health mean so much to me. Their support is both deeply personal and a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when we put healthcare first. Tomorrow, I’ll be sharing my healthcare platform - a plan to build a stronger healthcare system for everyone in Ontario. I look forward to sharing it with you.

I spent 27 years in health care. I’ve seen what works, and I’ve seen what’s broken. In the coming days I’ll release Health Care for All, my plan to rebuild publicly funded health care in Ontario. It’s shaped by the nurses, doctors and health workers I’ve worked alongside, and by people across the province who are waiting too long for care. It will show how we get every Ontarian a primary care team, help seniors age at home, deliver public coverage for mental health care, starting with young people, and help people stay healthy before they get sick. Health care Ontarians can count on, today and for the next generation. Join me. Let’s rebuild health care for all.

Ontario now has the highest number of problem gamblers in Canada. @LFairclo & I introduced a bill to ban online gambling ads because the warning signs were there, but the PCs voted it down. We couldn't afford to wait then, & we certainly can't afford to wait any longer. #onpoli

Ontario is on an alarming trajectory: Gambling-related suicides have tripled in Ontario since Doug Ford’s PCs privatized online gambling in 2022. Advertising for online gambling is supercharging addiction and suicide-related deaths. Getting ahead of this devastating problem means we must ban online gambling advertising. It is time to put public health first before we lose more people to gambling addiction. #onpoli cbc.ca/news/investigates/pro…

Friends, you should check out Lee’s great economic plan. It offers a different approach to economic development than what Ontario is used to, and covers some big things I’ve long talked about. It’s clear our government’s “old way” of supporting businesses has been inefficient given the outcomes, and that we have underperformed on growth, productivity, and building real capacity. Here are a few things Lee’s plan that I particularly like: - Moving public support away from straight grants toward equity co investment alongside private capital and repayable loans. This lets taxpayers share in the upside. The goal is building anchor companies that keep the jobs, the IP, the dividends, and the supply chains in Ontario. - Using procurement so government can act as a buyer of first resort. This does not mean handing cheques to everyone. It means moving faster to test and buy from new companies that are solving real problems. Becoming a proven customer is often more valuable to a young firm than a subsidy. It can also give proof to larger Canadian businesses, which are often slower and more risk averse than their American counterparts, to try new products and partnerships. - Making it faster and easier to start and grow businesses through regulatory reform. Simplifying rules and streamlining how government interacts with firms, with a goal of making Ontario one of the easiest places in North America to do business. - Prioritizing energy and infrastructure by economic return, and pursuing a more “manufacturing” approach to both. That means using standard designs and repeatable procurement to control costs. - A couple of ideas you will have seen from my platform, like pre permitting investment ready sites and partnering with Canadian pensions and private capital on infrastructure. There is clear alignment among many liberals on the importance of productivity and growth to generate the wealth that pays for the things we want in our society (ie great public education, universal healthcare). You’ll see this reflected in the solid platform released by Stephanie Bowman as well! Disclosure: I gave some policy advice earlier, but this is Lee’s plan. leefairclough.ca/policy/econ…

As a hospital chief executive, I was accountable for thousands of staff and a budget of hundreds of millions of dollars. There’s so much opportunity in Ontario. But people are struggling. They’re working hard and falling behind. They’re worried about what tariffs will mean for their livelihoods. They want a government focused on making life more affordable and growing the economy. That’s what my economic plan is about: creating opportunity, driving growth and investing in strong public services. Read my full economic plan: leefairclough.ca/policy/econ…

It means a lot to me to see the support for our campaign grow, including from people who have shaped the Ontario Liberal Party over decades. Lyn McLeod, who led our party from 1992 to 1996, is the fourth former party leader to endorse my leadership for the Ontario Liberal Party, including former Premier Kathleen Wynne, Bob Nixon and Murray Elston. Together, we’re building a winning campaign that brings Liberals together from across Ontario to build a better future for our province. #onpoli

This is a great housing plan by Lee! One thing we talked a lot about during the campaign is changing how we build, so that new housing is more beautiful. (I believe social buy-in for housing abundance is only possible long term if more of what we build is higher quality, in both materials and architecture.) The good news is that if we get tax, land use, permitting, and other rules right, we can lower prices and improve quality at the same time. Lee and I share a similar view on the path forward, and you should read more in her plan: 1) Homeownership is part of our culture, and the opportunity to achieve it matters especially to young Ontarians. Lee is committed to enabling 150,000 new home starts each year by lowering building costs so more projects are viable, through municipal infrastructure funding, tax reforms, building code reform, and reasonable zoning reform. - - 2) Rental prices are too high, and tenure security policies (i.e., rent control) can be paired with incentives to lower building costs and limit supply impact. This includes commitments to fund more non-market housing, align with Build Canada Homes on additional project capital and pipelines, fixing the LTB, and other incentives for market supply. - - 3) Solving homelessness and addiction challenges is a priority and requires a two-pronged approach: - Preventing people from becoming homeless in the first place through welfare reform - Expanding capacity of our rehabilitative health and transitional/supportive housing systems Simply put, this approach is compassionate and common sense. - - - Read more: leefairclough.ca/policy/hous… Disclosure: I provided some guidance on policy (but did not put it together)
Homeownership is out of reach for too many young people and families. Too many people are spending more of their paycheque just to keep up with their rent or mortgage and homelessness is rising. Every Ontarian deserves an affordable place they can call home and to stay safely housed. Here is my plan to deliver on that promise. Read my full housing plan at: leefairclough.ca/policy/hous…

Yet another example of overreach and wasteful spending by the Ford PC government. At least $48 million of Ontario taxpayer money to destroy bike lanes in Toronto - your hard-earned dollars that should be spent on healthcare, housing and public transit instead. #onpoli thestar.com/news/gta/ford-go…
