xitter.cf/BBCNewsnight/status/21… What do you expect when the government decides to scare the public to death with dire warnings of what sounds like an imminent emergency? If this was just preparedness for events like natural disasters, these types of warnings would have been given on a regular basis years ago. It's the suddenness of these warnings coming from the government that makes it seem like something imminent is going to occur.
Newsnight has found some retailers have seen large increases in sales after the Defence Secretary urged people to stock up last week:
Radios +160% (Robert Dyas)
Torches +284% (Maplin)
Tinned goods +40% (Iceland)

xitter.cf/MarioNawfal/status/211… So the UK government is screaming now to "Be Prepared." But be prepared for what? All this is doing is creating panic, and it doesn't mention if the threat is imminent or something that could happen months from now. Being prepared is good, but being well informed of the risks we face is better.
🇺🇸 Dan Bongino is telling families to stock up on 30 days of emergency food, water and batteries... and to do it TODAY.
“There’s nothing wrong with being prepared.”
When the FBI’s former No. 2 starts begging you to stock your pantry, you at least check the batteries.

xitter.cf/BBCNewsnight/status/21… Panic buying is already starting in the UK. Unless there is an imminent threat, this whole warning announced by the UK was dangerous. People now think that something is either about to happen or that it will happen in the not-too-distant future. Both scenarios are dangerous.

xitter.cf/BBCNewsnight/status/21… The Internet going down is nothing compared to losing food, water, medicine, or electricity for a substantial period of time. Society breaks down rapidly when none of those things are available for more than 3 days. What the UK should be focusing on is increasing civil defense to maintain order once the rioting begins for basic products. It can get ugly fast, and the only thing to save towns and cities is to maintain some semblance of order.

xitter.cf/AlexLuck9/status/21150… Since costs for frigates or destroyers today are exploding making each ship extremely expensive, it's best to have your design requirements locked up and finalized before even cutting the steel for the ship. The Constellation class frigate should also serve as a terrible warning for anyone making huge changes to a design while a ship is actually being built.
Canadian experiences on specifying, then changing the River-class should serve as a lesson to others on not repeating the same mistakes. The most obvious case being Germany with F127. Especially now that cost estimates cause political concerns.

Seems like all these warnings would not be going out unless there was a major threat of something imminent happening. Be prepared, because when social unrest causes law and order to disappear, you’re on your own.
There are warnings going out about 30 days of preparedness… take them seriously 🚨

Reminds me so much of the British government thinking that fighting in France and Belgium in WW1 was such a great idea. And how did that work out for a generation of British men lost in places like Ypres or the Somme. Ukraine is NOT NATO's war and as of now not an inch of NATO territory has been invaded by Russian troops. It seems that the UK and NATO would have their hands full just defending NATO territory without having to embark on an adventure in Ukraine that could very well lead to WW3.

If it was that inadequate a design, then it should not have been accepted by the Navy to begin with. Instead, they took a frigate, changed about 80% of it, and were ending up with a small destroyer rather than a frigate. Worse, to make all these huge changes while a ship was in the process of being built, shows a level of negligence only a bloated and wasteful bureaucracy could come up with. And NAVSEA didn't inform anyone what this monstrosity of the FREMM design would finally cost along the way. And with such stellar "successes" as the LCS and the Zumwalt destroyer, it's a wonder they don't just shut down NAVSEA altogether. If they did, we might actually have ships built on time and on budget, and what a concept that would be.

Don't even think about it. The fastest way to screw up a design for anything is to give it to the US Navy. The FREMM frigate was an excellent design already in service with 2 navies, yet NAVSEA managed to butcher it so much while trying to create the Constellation class frigate that they ended up having to scrap the whole program losing billions in the process. If the Navy is determined to build a ship that is over budget and way behind schedule, at least let it be an American design.

xitter.cf/liderfiscal/status/211… And the real question should be "Why now?" This video and these statements from the British government are starting to send the UK into a panic. Is a major cyberwar expected soon? Will it be from Iran if President Trump unleashes another round of bombings in Iran? Iran has already tried to attack one RAF base, so why isn't a larger attack plausible? People just don't dream up these warnings for no reason. There must be a credible threat and it could happen soon.

From a person who has lived through a few hurricanes, the George Floyd riots, and COVID, you had better be prepared for the next wave of social unrest that's coming to this country. Be armed, have a good supply of ammo on hand, stock up on some food, have a generator, and have lots of batteries for lanterns and flashlights. Sound severe? I've seen what happens when society breaks down and the police are nowhere to be found to help you. Be prepared and then at least you'll have a chance when the next wave of riots begins.

xitter.cf/jeromestarkey/status/2… If the Defense Editor of the Sun is raising the alarm, you would think other UK papers would do the same. Worse, the British Ministry of Defense (MoD) has been asked to find £10.7 billion in internal efficiencies through 2029–30 and up to £3.5 billion in immediate spending reductions and reprioritizations to bridge a multi-billion-pound funding gap in the Defense Investment Plan. Not only does the Royal Navy need more ships, and badly too, but the Labour government actually wants to cut the defense budget. It must be hard for our adversaries to take NATO seriously when the UK does stupid things like this, and that destroys deterrence.
🚨 ROYAL Navy is on track to have just ONE working ASW frigate available for ops next year.
They need 13
They have 5
2 could be ruled “unseaworthy” in months as per @NavyLookout
That leaves 3, all over 24 yrs old
1 on ops
1 in work up
1 in maintenance

The Royal Navy is flirting with disaster. The RN now has 5 frigates, but 2 could be ruled “unseaworthy," which leaves 3, all over 24 years old; 1 on ops, 1 in work up, 1 in maintenance. This is insane and if there ever is a war with Russia by 2030, as the Ministry of Defense says is a possibility, then the North Atlantic will be left mostly undefended by the Royal Navy, which means an even greater burden will be placed on the US Navy to fill in the defensive Greenland/Iceland/UK Gap. That is not only dangerous for the defense of the UK, but for all of NATO as well.
