In a night full of surprises Tuesday, the Senate race in deep-red Mississippi was one of the biggest. Late yesterday, the vote tally showed Democrat Scott Colom pulling further ahead of GOP incumbent Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith. The margin is still razor-thin. If Colom wins, he will make history. Mississippi hasn’t elected a Black senator since Reconstruction. No Democrat has won statewide there since 1982. The story of how Colom defied the odds in a staunchly Republican state is a fascinating one. Never a vigorous campaigner, Hyde-Smith overcame controversy in 2018 after telling a cattle rancher she'd be in the first row if he invited her to a “public hanging.” This year, she supplied Colom with campaign fodder by dismissing concerns about high beef prices in a local TV interview by saying Mississippians could simply pick another protein. But part of Colom's strong performance stemmed from his crossover appeal. He's been a district attorney in the state for a decade. His father was a well-known Republican lawyer who ran for state treasurer and worked on Ronald Reagan’s presidential transition team. wapo.st/4ekLuiq

The glimmer of a possibility that Mississippi might be in play for Democrats emerged in 2018 when Mike Espy ran against Cindy Hyde-Smith. In a race that many in the party initially wrote off as unwinnable, Espy surprised skeptics by coming within single-digits of Hyde-Smith. I visited Mississippi in 2018 shortly after Espy announced his candidacy. Like Colum, he ran as a centrist Democrat who worked to mobilize Black voters in Mississippi while trying to win over enough independent and moderate white voters to close the gap with his GOP challenger. “You can’t put me in a box,” Espy told me, highlighting his “sometimes conservative” record as a congressman 25 years earlier along with more progressive leanings on many issues. reuters.com/article/world/us…

I spoke to tons of voters this year. But I think this quote was the most illustrative. The anti-Trump sentiment ran deep in Maine. It was there in 2020, when Collins won, but it became too much this year. And it's because of voters like this. washingtonpost.com/politics/…

“She’s really going to regret it when we win on Nov. 3,” Colom told Semafor. “That’s when the regret’s really going to hit her.”

In private calls and texts, Republicans lamented strategies they now viewed as inadequate — like the southern redistricting gambit — or politically damaging, like launching the war in Iran. @nancook reports on how GOP politicians are processing the Blue Wave and bracing for a new Washington wapo.st/3UwSeTu

Latinos are going to shift left tonight. The question is how far. If Latinos vote like they did in 2020, it will be a good—not great—night for Democrats; Dems will win some of the gerrymandered Texas seats, might lose the Senate there. But if they vote like they did in 2018...

As voters go to the polls, Democrats are feeling upbeat as strong turnout and early-voting data show a motivated electorate that is angry about high costs under Trump’s leadership. Republicans, while trying to keep a hopeful tone, are preparing for a long night, with House Speaker Mike Johnson deploying a Bible verse to privately urge House Republicans to ignore the dour polling. wapo.st/4z3XVql

Notable report from the WSJ team here. In an election season with an unpopular war, it appears the U.S. military may have gone silent about disclosing strikes. The last strikes announced came in September. Requests for comment made tonight.
EXCLU: The U.S. attacked Iran’s Qeshm Island on Monday, U.S. officials said, in the latest of a series of limited strikes Washington has secretly carried out against the country in recent weeks as President Trump touted the possibility of a diplomatic deal.
