This remains true even when the kids grow older!
Having little kids is a big help to working in DC. My kids don’t care who I met with or who thinks well of me. It’s like the Roman guy who whispers “Remember thou art mortal” but much cuter.

Maybe we should start with a 5% tax on the wealth of economists.
What amazes me is the attitude of so many of the centibillionaires. A 5% tax will not make any difference to the way they live. Their spending may be extravagant, but it is still much less than their (correctly measured) income. They know that, as gifted as some of them indeed are, they have benefited from extreme luck (and the help of the state, and, to speak like an economist, monopoly rents). They know that their effective tax rate is low, relative to what many others pay. They know that extreme inequality is extremely unpopular, and can lead to political unrest, backlash, or worse. They must admit that, morally, it is hard to argue for a society in which some become obscenely wealthy, while so many are poor and see their income stagnate. They typically have not indicated that they are building their wealth to eventually make the world a better place. But they are still willing to fight the tax, spending hundreds of millions in California to avoid paying the tax. Why? They simply think what is theirs is theirs, end of story. They believe in the slippery slope, and if they do not take a stand on this levy, the government will come back for more. They hate the state and the notion that their money will be misused? Or?

And to be clear, I am not now nor have I ever been an economist. I'm a retired attorney and financial journalist for 20 years who writes about the economy for a living.

Why would anyone believe this would be a one-time tax?
Replying to @gabriel_zucman
The key problem is this: Why would billionaires permanently leave California in response to a one-time tax owed if they lived there on January 1, 2026? It would only make sense for them to leave if the tax becomes annual. But if the tax becomes annual, it would also generate revenue annually — by virtue of, well, being annual.

"They typically have not indicated that they are building their wealth to eventually make the world a better place." That's extremely incorrect for tech folks. Almost all of them believe they are world improvers now. Not just eventually.

Local communities requiring profit shares and contributions from AI companies in exchange for data center licenses is just standard Coasian bargaining. If your product is going to make a gazillion bucks, it’s rational for those impacted to demand a share in the upside.

Zach Bryan sings about McGlinchy’s in Philly. I used to live next door. Had my packages sent there. You could smoke indoors and order hotdogs for a quarter. Was the ideal dive bar.

The best GOP GOTV ad ever produced. They want to throw us in jail. It’s not just Trump they’re after.
Kara Swisher says Elon Musk might be in jail right now if Kamala Harris was in office and “he knows what’s coming” if Democrats take back power.

Who would be the biggest beneficiary of the NIMBY anti-data center movement? I hate to say it because some of you will freak out. But the answer is @elonmusk. Because he wants to put data centers in space. The costlier the earth data centers become, the more space data centers make sense.

Happy 20th anniversary to @FTAlphaville! As it turns out, 2006 was quite a year for digital-first financial journalism. Earlier that year, @espiers brought me and @TheStalwart on to launch @dealbreaker, with @besslevin joining that summer.
