The last Polish government bought Israeli Pegasus spyware from the NSO Group and used it to spy on its rivals, only it was too dumb to realise the mass surveillance state catches everyone.
The software infects smartphones with little or no interaction from the user. It can extract messages, emails, photos, location data, call logs, and activate the microphone/camera.
The Polish government was using this against rival politicians, journalists, lawyers, and activists. The problem was they never had full control. They lacked admin passwords for key features, and the server module that infects phones remained under NSO's full control. In other words, NSO ultimately decided who was compromised.
It appears that Israel maintained backdoor access to Pegasus and used it to spy on the Polish government. Now the Poles are unsure how many politicians were compromised or who has access to the data. What is not in doubt is that NSO was working directly with Israel.
Current Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called it one of the biggest post-communist scandals in Poland and said that NSO cooperates with Israeli intelligence.
Now if you think the Poles are the only ones impacted here, I have a bridge to sell you. Next time a western politician stands with Israel after it blows up a school, you know what's going on.
