Cuonzo Martin was 26, playing professional basketball in Italy, when he stopped wanting to eat. He arrived there at 215 pounds. One day in practice he was running from the baseline toward half court and passed out.
He flew Rome to New York to Indianapolis, got home at 1:15 in the morning, carried his young son inside, then told his wife they needed to get to the hospital.
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Down to 178 pounds. Four and a half months of chemotherapy.
He survived. He also told almost no one. Word spread only when a nurse mentioned his name to her father, who recognized it.
"It was probably a little ignorant of me," he said.
