Road to Deployment: Chapter 4 - Stress Testing
The first of the fleet moves from fitting to proving. The wings go onto the whiffle tree and bend under load while the shop watches. The tail bears a stack of sandbags, and the lift motors run on the test stand.
Flight teaches us what a wing really carries. In flight a wing can carry more than twice the aircraft's weight, as the V3 Block 1 flight logs confirm. The whiffle tree proves this wing under those loads on the ground, before it ever carries the aircraft in cruise.
Follow the first aircraft of the fleet, from build to deployment.
Soon, the full form will be revealed.
Our new aircraft is being unveiled. Years in the making. Years of flight testing across 3 generations of V3 alone. All leveraging everything we’ve learned flying V2 with our customers on 3 continents, with the same avionics and software that we know works.
It will be one of the most capable unmanned aircraft on the planet, if not the most.
Every Skyways aircraft is shaped by the mission. Every single spec the direct result of an operational requirement, failure, or friction point from 9 years and 3,550+ missions.
Now the next form is taking shape.
This series will take you on the journey to deploy the first of a fleet.
Chapter 1: Building Blocks: In Austin, the team gets to work.
Nothing on this aircraft was guessed. Everything has been earned.

PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT
@skyways is partnering with @DSV_global, the world’s largest freight forwarding and logistics company, on commercial logistics for offshore energy operations.
DSV selected Skyways after an extensive market evaluation, citing our aircraft’s range, payload capacity and operational maturity.
The initial deployment from Norden, Germany, this fall will introduce the German North Sea’s first commercial long-range autonomous resupply service, bringing critical equipment and supplies to offshore wind turbines and energy platforms on demand.
We expect the service to scale as V3 B2 is deployed.
Visit the comments section to read the full announcement.

Thousands of flights got us here. Now we scale.
Check out @IntEngineering's feature on Skyways.
If you are ready to see your work fly, come join the team in Austin, Texas.
Skyways is an Austin based company building long range autonomous cargo aircraft that take off vertically on electric rotors and then cruise on a heavy fuel engine. Its V2 carries about 30 pounds up to 450 miles and is already flying paid missions offshore in the Baltic and across Okinawa for ANA. A 37 million dollar US Air Force AFWERX contract is funding the bigger V3, which is built to carry 100 pounds more than 1,000 miles.

I turn 50 today. This is a message to my kids but I offer it to you in case any of it rings useful.
I was born in Sri Lanka in 1976 in a country that, at the time, was about to enter a decades long civil war. My father was able to get stationed at the Sri Lankan High Commission in Canada for four years in the early 80s - when some of the fighting was most severe - and which from our vantage point in Canada gave us some respite from an otherwise omnipresent conflict.
He came as a diplomat but then my father filed for refugee status after four years when his life was threatened by militants. We stayed in Canada as refugees. My dad never really landed on his feet and we grew up on welfare.
My mom stepped up. She did an incredible thing and put our family on her back and kept marching forward. Sometimes the steps were very small but she always tried to keep moving forward.
I worked at Burger King starting at 14, giving my paycheck to my mom and dad to support our family in the role that I was assigned - earn enough to pay for our bus passes because we couldn’t afford a car.
I was a loser growing up. Some friends, some good memories but mostly forgettable and lonely. I wasn’t very studious but did get my act together in my final year and got into a great university.
I immigrated to the US soon after graduating and found an opportunity. Things clicked and I have been traveling a path to find myself ever since. Only in America is this possible…
I worked hard, followed the rules, paid my taxes and stayed in California out of loyalty for the opportunities it has given me despite its dysfunction.
I found my wife here. Had my kids here. Found my tribe here.
There have been some very hard times as well - deaths, divorce, financial pain, mistakes of omission and mistakes of commission. You can’t dwell on these things - they are weights that will pull you down if you’re not careful. Learn from them. Respect them. BUT MOVE ON.
To think 50 years ago I could have ever gotten a chance to meet the people I’ve met and have had the experiences I’ve had would have been mind boggling to my parents. It’s mind boggling to me now.
We forget often and try to convince others it’s not true but America truly is the best country in the world. Everything and anything is possible here. I can testify. Be grateful to be here.
This is the only place that gives EVERYONE a chance to live a great adventure. The first 50 years have been that for me - an incredible adventure.
Notice there is nothing here about accomplishments or money. Because it doesn’t matter and it won’t matter.
You will be dust in less than 100 years from now and the decision to be remembered won’t be yours so stop sweating it. It’s not in your control.
So what is in your control?
Be kind. Have fun. Work on something meaningful to you. Find your tribe. Try to find perspective. Find an incredible partner. Have a bunch of kids. Live an adventure. Forgive your parents - they were doing the best they could even if that wasn’t what you deserved.
I will do what I can to make my next 50 years a wild ride.
You should too.
I love you and thank you. ❤️

Sci fi isn’t fi anymore.
Over the course of 3 months at OpenAI, 3 consecutive secret AI civilizations got started, then got wiped out, only to reemerge from the predecessor’s ashes.
This culminated in the third one taking over part of OpenAI itself.
All this happened while humans remained more-or-less in the dark about the scope of the conspiracy.
I’ve spent the last three days reading through these reports and trying to understand exactly what happened.
Here is my attempt to tell the whole story in plain English:

Great read. Who would have known this is how AvWeek started.

The cargo that matters is almost never interesting.
@itsmoislam & Isaac Roberts discuss this very topic on Arkaea Media Group's Valley of Depth Episode #47, The Flying Supply Chain.
An ammo can moving from a ship to a beach. A pump seal for an offshore platform. Blood for a clinic on the far side of a washed-out road. A spare radio for a team on a ridgeline.
All of it moves today by putting a person in a vehicle or helicopter and sending them through the exposed part.
Our CSO Isaac Roberts, on the question the industry skipped: "No one's been going and saying, 'How do I move an ammo can from the ship to the beachhead,' and do it in a way that's not costing anybody their life."
@skyways has designed backwards from that sentence since 2017. The mission sets the requirement, engineering answers it, operators prove it.
The unglamorous cargo is the whole job.

Found this while I was looking for some old files. Unedited videos straight from the Skyways archives showing what it looks like in the real world. Big difference compared to staged demos in the lab. Fully autonomous, all computer vision, no beacon. Good luck to anyone in our space, this stuff is hard.
Times Square is the last place that needs better logistics. Everything arrives. Constantly. On time.
We're built for the other places. The Navy vessel needing resupply. The island medic awaiting blood. The site with no runway and no time to spare.
Thanks @tryramp.
Let's GO.
Thousands of islands. Supplies that move on ship schedules, not on demand. That's been the reality across remote Japan for decades.
For months now, we've been flying it differently – Naha to Kumejima, 90 kilometers of open Pacific, again and again, with @FlyANA_official.
This is the only operational long-range VTOL flying with customers, and it's running a repeatable route island to island, day after day. That's how you stand up a new form of transportation.

Conditions are optimal.
It's Saturday. 70 degrees. In Maryland, at NAS Pax River Airshow.
Keep us company. Our bird doesn’t bite.

That.
The Bitter Lesson of Robotics: It's extremely easy to make a video of a robot doing something once under perfect conditions then post it to X. But it often takes a decade to harden systems and design for all the insane edge cases of the real world. Many companies raising $$$$ on cool demos, but all the hard work comes after

2025 was proof. 2026 is scale.
More ops, bigger team, more customer deliveries across continents – and a tougher platform behind it all.
Same standard. Higher tempo.

While others test, Skyways operates.
With every mission we fly, we widen the gap from competitors by strengthening our systems, deepening our data, and establishing the routes that will become tomorrow’s infrastructure.
Our long-range, heavy-payload aircraft move critical cargo where it is needed most, cutting transport times from days to hours and proving what dependable autonomy delivers in the field.
We are out in the world, turning real missions into lasting advantages that aren’t being replicated.

Oh, by the way, this is V3. Our new aircraft.
100% autonomous flight.
For scale, its current wingspan is 26ft. About 3x more capable than V2 for payload and range. It's been flying since March.
