In 2016, I stole an idea I found on reddit (r/entrepreneur) and made $50,000 in 2 months. Here's the story and how you can do it too if you live in (or near) a city of at least 300,000 people... 🧵
If I wanted to reach $5k MRR in the next 365 days, I’d build a simple Shopify app that tells merchants what's their profit, powered by AI.
@jackdoesecom turned his spreadsheet into Profit AI. Five months after launch, he reported $30k MRR with fewer than 40 paying customers.
Go search “profit calculator” on the Shopify App Store. The first three organic results I saw had 66, 97 and 28 reviews. Only one of the top six had the Built for Shopify badge.
I'm sure you can do better.
At $39/month, 129 stores would bring in $5,031 MRR.

If I wanted to reach $5k MRR in the next 365 days, I’d build a simple Shopify app that does programmatic SEO.
Outrank went from $300 to $300k MRR in 15 months, according to @tibo_maker.
Blog tools are not dead.
I’d build a smaller, cheaper version for Shopify. Take a store’s catalog and turn it into blog posts that answer the oddly specific questions people ask Google and ChatGPT. If you sell Kindle cases, “which case fits my 2018 Paperwhite?” is a pretty good one to show up for.
Also please try to guess how many reviews the first organic result for “programmatic SEO” has on the Shopify App Store?
Zero.
I’m pretty sure you can beat zero.

No one wants to send "I just want 100 hoodies. Why are we scheduling a meeting?"
If I wanted to reach $5k MRR by next Christmas (2027 🎄), I’d build a simple Shopify app that helps merchants turn custom quote requests into paid orders.
Three signals make this worth investigating:
- Shopify opened native B2B features to Basic, Grow and Advanced in April 2026. More merchants can now offer wholesale pricing, company accounts and payment terms without upgrading to Plus. THATS A WHOLE NEW POOL of people who can use this (like 100x more than before)
- Gartner’s research published in May 2026 found that 70% of surveyed B2B buyers prefer a fully digital, self-service buying experience.
I’d test “request a quote,” “B2B quote” and “custom order quote” as App Store keywords.

btw you absolutely need to use orka.chat if you dev this app to run your support
If I wanted to reach $5k MRR by next Christmas (2027🎄), I’d build a simple Shopify app that creates and automatically maintains useful FAQs for every product.
Three signals make this worth investigating:
- Google announced Merchant Center attributes for answers to common product questions, compatible accessories and substitutes. It now encourages merchants to submit this richer information for AI shopping.
- Shopify reports that visits from AI platforms grew more than 8x year over year in Q1 2026. More than half of those visits landed directly on product pages. That makes the information on those pages particularly relevant.
- The competition is not that high on the Shopify app store for AI Faq
My bet: merchants with hundreds of products could pay to close those information gaps across their catalog.
“Premium quality, designed with passion” is lovely. Still doesn’t tell me whether the bloody thing is dishwasher safe. So have ChatGPT check the screenshot and guess the fabrics of it for instance.
Here’s what I’d build:
- Read product descriptions, specifications, supplier documents and store policies.
-Check product images and make guess on the size/weight/texture if nothing is said about it on the product page
-Automatically add a different FAQ everywhere (collection page, product pages, homepage, etc.)
- Suggest relevant questions about compatibility, sizing, materials, care and returns.
- Draft answers from verified information, flagging missing facts for the merchant.
- Let merchants approve and publish FAQs across multiple products (or make it automatic)
- Flag affected answers when the underlying product information changes.
Then I’d explore exporting those approved answers into supported product-feed fields.
I’d test “AI product FAQ” and “automatic FAQ” as App Store keywords, and measure whether the added answers improve purchases.
The opportunity I’d test for 2027: help merchants make their products easier for both people and AI shopping tools to understand.

If I wanted to reach $5k MRR by next October, I’d build a simple Shopify app that finds the shops already selling your products and builds your store locator for you.
For the story, my little sister has her own brand and shop.
Then another shop started selling her clothes.
Then 2. Then 10 across France. Then Belgium, Canada and Japan.
Which creates a practical question for people who want to TRY the clothes before buying:
“Where can I buy your products near me?”
And Shopify just made this more interesting.
In its Fall ’26 Editions, Shopify announced that AI agents can discover physical retail locations and direct shoppers to the nearest store.
So I’d look beyond putting pins on a map.
A brand needs accurate information about its own shops AND the independent retailers carrying its products. Across countries. With addresses that change.
Here’s what I’d build:
- Enter your brand’s website.
- AI finds retailers listing your products.
- It collects addresses and evidence they carry your brand.
- You approve the matches. Your map fills itself.
- It creates readable stockist pages alongside the map.
- It checks periodically for new retailers and outdated information.
For the map: Mapbox, Google Maps, MapTiler, HERE or TomTom.
You don’t need to personally photograph every road in Belgium.
My bet for 2027: as AI helps people decide where to shop, keeping this information accurate becomes more valuable.
And newer apps can still get noticed. MAPMIGO launched in 2026 and already ranks #1 for "store locator".
At $49/month, 103 paying brands gets you past $5k MRR.

also, the absolute BEST live chat for people running a shopify app is : orka.chat . Don't even think about it, use it.
If I wanted to reach $5k MRR in the next 12 months, I’d build a Shopify app that tells AI bots to f*ck off.
Hear me out.
In July 2025, Cloudflare announced it would start blocking unauthorized AI crawlers by default.
Then look at the Shopify App Store: one bot blocker has 1,800+ reviews. Another has 500+.
Merchants already want protection.
Now everyone is building agents that browse their stores, collect their prices and read their product catalogs.
I’m betting some merchants would quite like a say in that.
And that should be kind of easy to get into top 5 for "bot" keyword, even easier for "ai bot" keyword.

@zmbnski what are you doing on my screenshot ahah (just noticed)
If I wanted to reach $5k MRR in the next 12 months, I’d read upcoming EU regulations (or ask Grok what law is about to become a standard) and build a Shopify app out of it (even a wordpress plugin).
I looked at Shopify apps launched in 2026, ranked by reviews (check post by @patjakubik)
Four of the top ten mention EU withdrawal features.
The biggest has 2,320 reviews, more than my main app. I'm happy for them. Obviously. Very happy. 😭
A withdrawal button. Not an AI agent. Not a revolutionary new way to chat with a PDF.
Developers spotted a legal requirement and built something merchants needed help implementing.
That’s a strategy worth paying attention to:
- Find an upcoming obligation affecting a specific group of merchants.
- Understand who actually needs to comply and by when.
- Pick one painful part you can reliably simplify. Don't do EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just do one stupid EU regulation feature.
- Launch while merchants are looking for help.
Merchants need help finding accessibility issues, fixing them and catching new ones when they change their themes or install apps.
They sell candles. They don’t want to spend their evenings figuring out what WCAG means.
And ongoing monitoring gives them a reason to keep paying. Just don’t sell a magic widget that supposedly makes an entire store compliant.
At $49/month, 103 paying customers gets you past $5k MRR.
I’d investigate specific App Store keywords like “EAA compliance” or “European accessibility” rather than just “accessibility.”

Also, if you build it, use orka.chat for your live chat support.
I built it and use it for my own apps. Helping customers directly is how I earn reviews.
Let me know what you’re building, too. Happy to share advice.
Yes, this was the ad. You survived.
also, if you do build it, use orka.chat for your live chat support (I use it, this is how I get my reviews) and let me know, I'll advise you
Don't build AI slop apps that will never be used by anyone.
I've got a list of 10+ apps that could go to 5k MRR in less than a year. Stay tuned I'll post them there soon.

You have a business in 2026?
You need to get reviews from REAL people so LLMs know you can be trusted and bring you clients.
The easiest thing to do to collect reviews is simply to ask for a review using a livechat on your website.
-Do not rely on AI to get reviews for you.
-Nobody I know will bother leaving a 5-star review for an AI agent on trustpilot/GMB/etc.
Let AI help your team behind the scenes while your customers talk to a real person. That's exactly what I built Orka for.
After using it internally for 3+ years and gathering more than 6,500 reviews from real businesses around the world for my own businesses, I'm releasing it to everyone today.
Go check it out if you're serious about your business: orka.chat
Everything is great about owning an electrical vehicle until a tree falls on a cable and you have no electricity for 7 days and you can't drive anywhere
My Wednesday morning > Your Wednesday morning.
I drove 1h30 to buy a couple of black swans, as I'm planning to start breeding them on my ponds.
The guy who sold me the swans insisted A LOT that we have a drink (at 11:30am lmao). Since he was holding a 25cm knife (I have no clue why, or whether he was drunk or not), I said yes, obviously.
Then he told me I should act like a man and drink some whisky. I never drink whisky. A single drop could make me puke.
He was playing with the knife and looking at me weirdly. I said yes, obviously. God that's terrible.
Then his wife, Claudette, asked me to fix their old 2011 laptop out of the blue.
He was still holding the knife and still looking at me. So I said yes, obviously.
Then my survival instinct kicked in, and I faked a phone call and ran like crazy because I genuinely thought I was about to end up in the local crime news.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk. There's no moral to this story except: don't buy black swans from a drunk guy in rural France.
My swans are fine though.
Please someone create a startup generating those concepts from age 4 to 18. Add a search engine powered by AI.
Make it absurdly cheap (or free?) and try to have big universities sponsoring it.
That's the future.

hey @marclou any chance you add Shopify apps to trustMRR ?
