also just replied to someone else about this but I've seen some canon compliant fics with both as hockey players which absolutely bastardise Shane's characterisation (and ilya's sometimes) and so maybe that's why I find it hard to see this as an issue just with those AUs lol

y’all we had this discourse in like dec/jan where those of us who write these fics pointed out that shane’s autism and personal drive make it narratively compelling to see him go all in on other professions and that it is in most cases not a malicious or discriminatory choice
