As the first Ambassador & Permanent Observer of the International Youth Organization (OIJ) to the United Nations, I know what it means to carry the voice and hopes of a generation into the halls of global diplomacy.
You have already made history, becoming one of the youngest Permanent Observers to the United Nations and representing millions across the IGAD region with dignity, courage and purpose.
From your journey as a young refugee to becoming a voice for Africa on the world stage, you embody the very reason why young people must not only be included in leadership… but trusted with it.
Having had the privilege to know you personally, I have witnessed your humility, determination and genuine commitment to serve.
Africa’s #youth is not waiting for the future. Leaders like you prove they are already shaping it.
Proud to stand with you, my friend. The best is yet to come!!! 🌍🇺🇳

The Horn of Africa is one of the most affected regions in the world by climate change. This fact is well known and well reported. As IGAD, with support from our Member States and partners, we have invested in climate early warning services, management and adaptation programs to reduce the impact of climate disasters in the region. However, the stark reality is that climate finance in the IGAD region remains at a record low. During my meeting with H.E. @AbdikerM, IOM Chief of Staff, we agreed to collaborate not only on mitigating the impact of climate change on migration but also on identifying alternative financing models for regional programs aimed at development for marginalized communities.
I look forward to our continued partnership in building lasting solutions for the region.

Forty years ago, IGAD was established on the principle that climate shocks do not respect borders. This visionary decision by our founding fathers remains relevant and is our greatest asset today.
Recently, this was clearly demonstrated during the locust outbreak in 2023/24, where IGAD's coordinated response was more effective compared to 2019/20 when countries and partners acted independently.
At the round table discussions on Enhancing Resilience in the Horn of Africa, I urged partners to work closely with IGAD to ensure a more resilient and prosperous region.

In Africa, border regions are too often where poverty, fragility, and neglect converge, while in more developed parts of the world, borders are where connectivity, growth, and opportunity thrive.
This must concern us.
At the 28th Horn of Africa Initiative meeting on prioritising corridors to enhance trade and connectivity, I reiterated that borderlands must be placed at the centre of sustainable development in our region.
Corridors must not only move goods. They must also create opportunity for the communities that live along them.

IGAD Calls for Equity in Global Governance at UNGA
On behalf of the Executive Secretary, H.E. @DrWorkneh , the @IGAD_Missions Permanent Representative to the UN, Mr @cherinet_, delivered a statement at the United Nations General Assembly marking the 60th anniversary of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
He noted that racism persists not only in societies but also within global governance systems, pointing to Africa’s continued exclusion from permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council.
He reaffirmed IGAD’s commitment to justice, dignity, and inclusive multilateralism, calling for reforms to ensure fair representation and sovereign equality.
