Best Crime Novel of the Year according to the influential Bloody Barnes Crimewriting Festival of 2026. Beat a lot of heavy hitters. If you like crime fiction why not read it to see if you agree? ‘Must read’ @DailyMail ‘Immersive, authentic, evocative’ @FinancialTimes

What is a better apology for slavery than stopping it? Britain did this long ago, at vast cost and the commitment of the Royal Navy. Why is this still a conversation, if not gesture politics? digitaleditions.telegraph.co…

This is an excellent article by @NigelBiggar in response to the Guardian's piece on Monday about the campaign against Project Spire. Nigel's article is based on clear evidence and historical knowledge, and I wholeheartedly recommend it. Gift access in next post, do share... 1/2

Lovely review in @spectator by @allan_mallinson of Simon Prior Palmer’s book on his father, the remarkable Errol PP, one of two brothers simultaneously to command armoured brigades in the SWW. Fascinatingly, Simon’s g/father was Lord Linlithgow, penultimate Viceroy of India. I read a copy in draft and thought it brilliantly written and beautifully produced by @chiselbury

Breaking News !!! I've just been informed that the launch date for Real Rogue Heroes has been brought forward from March 8 to January 21 2027. That's 3 days after 'Blue Monday' - apparently the most depressing day of the year. Real Rogue Heroes: the book to banish the blues.

I feel the ghost of Prof Richard Holmes looking over my shoulder with approval. He always said that Brig Erroll Prior-Palmer, (D-Day tank commander & father of Lucinda), needed a good biography, and here one is! And the @TheSpectator approves!

While recently doing @WarshipsIFR magazine research for likely pics to illustrate something related to the movie 'Pressure', I came across this rather remarkable image of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander Allied Forces. It was taken in early 1944 at Tregantle Fort, along the coast of SE Cornwall. The caption describes Gen Eisenhower as firing a Browning heavy machine gun 'off its mount from his hip, while inspecting an infantry unit of the 29th Infantry Division.' Go Ike! 😁 It is an official US Army image. Tregantle Fort is known to me, having walked the stretch of the SW Coastal Path that goes right by it. I was inspired to use it as the backdrop for some action in my novel 'Martin's Eyes' @chiselbury in which there is also shooting in the same spot - by a U-boat, at people on the shore near the fort, and with fire returned out to sea at the German submarine by British forces located in its vicinity. More info on the book here iainballantyne.com/martins-e…

Actions have consequences. It’s bizarre to think that @Ed_Miliband didn’t think there would be consequences for the UK’s blind following of the domestic Muslim vote in the raft of measures it has taken against Israel. These demonstrate that the U.K. is less a friend of Israel even than the signatories of the Abraham Accords. Crazy. As this statement correctly affirms, the UK’s actions include, ‘among others, unilateral recognition of a virtual “Palestinian state” in September 2025; the renewal of funding to UNRWA; the suspension of licences for defence exports to Israel; the imposition of sanctions on Israeli ministers; the imposition of sanctions on Israeli individuals and entities; the suspension of negotiations on a free trade agreement; restrictions on Israel’s official participation in an international defence and security equipment exhibition in Britain; the freezing of military dialogue and security cooperation; the prevention of IDF officers from participating in training at the Royal College of Defence Studies; and repeated, biased and unilateral attacks against Israel in the international arena.’ The U.K. has no similar measures against a country it otherwise declares as a friend. The U.K. is quite simply an enemy of the only democracy in the Middle East. That will please all the right people.
Statement by Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa'ar We established a clear principle: It is not possible to act against Israel without Israel taking appropriate measures in response. In this spirit, the measures I announced on 8 September have been implemented: 1.The removal of the British representatives from the International Gaza Support Center in Kiryat Gat. 2.The termination of British activity to train Palestinian Authority forces in Judea and Samaria. 3.The denial of entry to Israel of 12 British elected officials and other British citizens involved in antisemitic and anti-Israel activity, as well as those who deny our very right to exist. 4.The British Consulate in Jerusalem is ending its operations today. Accordingly, the sign of the British Consulate in Jerusalem has been removed. We did not want to reach this point, but the actions of the UK Labour Government brought us here. Their latest decision in this series was to initiate a range of far-reaching sanctions against the communities in Judea and Samaria, as well as additional sanctions on defence exports to Israel. All this was accompanied by hostile rhetoric, including false accusations against Israel, such as accusations of “ethnic cleansing.” This decision adds to a growing and escalating series of unilateral measures against Israel adopted by the Labour Government since taking office in July 2024. These measures included, among others, unilateral recognition of a virtual “Palestinian state” in September 2025; the renewal of funding to UNRWA; the suspension of licences for defence exports to Israel; the imposition of sanctions on Israeli ministers; the imposition of sanctions on Israeli individuals and entities; the suspension of negotiations on a free trade agreement; restrictions on Israel’s official participation in an international defence and security equipment exhibition in Britain; the freezing of military dialogue and security cooperation; the prevention of IDF officers from participating in training at the Royal College of Defence Studies; and repeated, biased and unilateral attacks against Israel in the international arena.
