Baseball for kids is too serious.
I am coaching my sons coach pitch team for the first time this season
Gotta say that I was blessed with a great set of parents and kids
Now the kids are 6-8, but mostly 7 yo, they are about as distracted as my son
On defense there's a good chance 50% of the kids are either in the dirt, twirling around or staring into space.
"Jimmy get off the ground!"
"Bobby stop kicking the dirt up!"
"Brandon eyes on the batter!"
As I yell from the dugout.
We played a team last week where all the kids were baseball ready, pretty much every time. It was strange.
That team was so serious.
Acting like it was the World Series.
I grew up playing tournament ball and had a love hate relationship with it. Too serious. But also fun. And I was pretty good.
As my sons get older I feel like there is so much tension with having fun, learning and winning.
In order to have fun, you have to be good. Winning is fun.
For my 6-8yo team they have no idea if we are winning or losing. They just play.
And that's good enough for now. We can be more serious later.
