ALT Educational Experiences of U.S. Children during the 2020-2021 School Year in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic. This study focused on children’s educational experiences during the first full school year of the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2021) compared to the pre-pandemic school year (2019-2020). The data comes from a national sample of 1,666 children in Kindergarten through 12th Grade. The results highlight that disruptions in children’s educational environment continued through the first full school year of the COVID-19 pandemic. 92% of parents saw COVID-19 as a risk to their children’s education at the start of the pandemic. Parents took on larger roles in their children’s education, but felt less effective in their abilities as educators. They were also less comfortable and satisfied when communicating with teachers. More children received school provided meals -especially among younger grades. Children had increased schoolwork struggles. Johnson et al., 2024
