At face value, a hippo and an elephant might not have much in common – but no one’s told Bumpy and Wangalla! The adorable pair have fallen trunk over tail for each other. Both are orphans, and two of our youngest rescues at that. They will grow up step in step at our Kaluku Unit, until they are ready to reclaim their places in the wild.

I had a great time stopping by two Jackson staples: Offbeat, a cool local record shop, and Marshall’s Music & Bookstore, the oldest Black-owned bookstore in the country. Of course I left with a new record for my wife and picked up a book for my daughters.

Through the fall and winter of 2023, my phone kept lighting up with calls and texts from Arab and Muslim Democratic staffers on the Hill. Several told me they were being kept out of the meetings where their bosses decided how to respond to Israel’s war in Gaza, and that they were labeled “emotional” and “difficult” for seeing it differently. They pushed for the vigils on Capitol Hill to include Palestinian lives alongside Israeli ones. None ever did.
After Tuesday’s results and the increasing rejection of AIPAC, I keep thinking about them. They spoke up at a cost to their standing in their own offices, and they kept at it while being shut out every step of the way. That took courage, and I hope the party remembers it next time.
