President Trump's Medicaid agency pulled the Biden-era guidance inviting states to bill Medicaid for groceries and rent in March 2025. Its spokesperson said that policy "distracted the Medicaid program from its core mission."
California's answer is in its own slide deck from May. The federal waiver that built the program expires December 31, and the renewal request is sitting with Trump's Medicaid agency. Twelve of its fifteen add-on services, the food included, were filed under the state's managed care contracts instead, so the state says they do not need the waiver to continue.
Washington still pays sixty-two cents of every Medi-Cal dollar.
Gavin Newsom, California's governor, last year on the Republican Medicaid bill: "hospitals will close."

GasBuddy is reporting unleaded gas fell to $2.99 a gallon at some stations in Texas in October.
From mid to late October showed the cheapest stations in Texas at $3.16 (around October 19) and as low as $2.99 in some daily summaries shortly after.
