An exquisite piece of journalism by @TomJunod. I reread it every year. esquire.com/news-politics/a4…
If I were a gifted filmmaker with many resources and the ability to form and execute a vision, here is the version of The Odyssey I would have made.
Is the person who named daddy longlegs the same person who named the subwoofer these are just some thoughts I’ve been having
Reporters are allowed to make mistakes, as long as they take ownership for them. They are human. Applause to Nina Totenberg for taking ownership in this way. Stuff like this happens to the very best. Lapses in judgement happen, and we should acknowledge them and move on.
Replying to @brianstelter
Totenberg read the text of the apology message she sent to Justice Alito:
"Dear Justice Alito, there are no words to adequately apologize for today's error in reporting your retirement. It was entirely my fault. I rushed out of the courtroom after the opinion announcements, and when I realized that the usual rush of folks after a few minutes had not happened, I asked somebody was going on inside, to which the answer was, 'retirement announcements.' I didn't hear the 's' on 'announcements,' and I assumed something no reporter should ever do, that you were retiring. It was the worst professional mistake of my more than 50 years in journalism. I could go on, but I don't know what else to say, except that I am so, so sorry."
I continue to be astounded by the absolute bovine stupidity of people like William F. Buckley, Antonin Scalia, Bari Weiss and her acolytes with good vocabularies, et al. They are so confident about their empty ideas!
This is an extortion scheme and it's wild to think people support this use of public dollars. Any award you have to pay for is worthless.
- Visit Buffalo funded by visitor tax
- Michelin offers to come to entire Great Lakes Rust Belt region, incl. Buffalo
- Visit Buffalo would have had to pay $250k/yr — 5.5% of the marketing budget
- Visit Buffalo said no
- No possibility of Michelin stars

It’s okay for hard things to be hard. On the subject of AI and writing, I like the way George Saunders puts it:
It's tough to explain the mental and physical drain and anxiety that comes from spending your *entire career* believing that it will soon come to an end, only to go on to work another day. "Maybe tomorrow?" That's how most newspaper reporters feel most of the time.
It’s incumbent upon anyone who has ever been ostracized, anyone who believes in human dignity, to protect trans people and prevent the extremists in our country from traveling any further down this dark path. If you’ve read history you know where it leads. We cannot allow it.
Nothing feels more like summer to me than an excellent Buffalo News intern-written story on the Allentown Art Festival. Just a classic, Buffalo circa 2005 feeling that I absolutely love. buffalonews.com/news/local/a…

Buffalo is the only city in the world where you can stand in one spot and hear five mediocre Tom Petty cover bands playing simultaneously.
