Rajya Sabha MP AA Rahim wrote to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on 21 October, expressing serious concern over the reported exposure of State Bank of India customer data on the dark web and calling for urgent remedial measures. Comrade AA Rahim pointed out that the reportedly exposed data included customers’ names, mobile numbers, dates of birth, email and residential addresses, and details associated with loan and lead records, potentially exposing customers to identity theft, phishing and financial fraud. Comrade Rahim urged immediate steps to notify and assist affected customers, a comprehensive and independent investigation into the incident, and transparent communication of the findings and corrective measures taken. He also called for stronger cybersecurity safeguards across public sector banks and strict accountability for any negligence or security lapses.
Wrote to FM @nsitharaman on the alarming exposure of SBI customer data on the dark web. I urge an independent probe, direct notification to affected citizens, and strict accountability for security lapses. #SBI #DataBreach #DataPrivacy #CyberSecurity #DataProtection

Jamia Millia Islamia cannot keep its students voiceless indefinitely. Nearly two decades without an elected Students’ Union, students on an indefinite hunger strike, and protesters facing assault, suspension and rustication - is this how a Central University should treat its students? Articles 19(1)(a) & 19(1)(c) of the Constitution, the Jamia Millia Islamia Act, UGC’s Students’ Entitlement Guidelines, the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations upheld by the Hon'ble Supreme Court, and the Delhi High Court’s 2025 judgment in Jamia Teachers Association v. Jamia Millia Islamia, all reinforce the case for democratic representation of students and freedom of association. I have urged the Union Education Minister @JoshiPralhad to intervene urgently. Student representation is not a concession to be granted; it is a right to be respected. #jamiyamilia

Thousands of people took part in a night march organised by the CPI(M) Malappuram District Committee in Keralam on Monday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and expressing solidarity with the protests at Jantar Mantar. The march began near EMS Mandiram, the Party District Committee office, passed through the town and concluded near the Government Taluk Hospital. Polit Bureau member A Vijayaraghavan inaugurated the public meeting that was held following the march. Addressing the gathering, he said that universal adult suffrage was guaranteed by the Constitution, and Prime Minister Modi and the Chief Election Commissioner, who is acting under the influence of the BJP-RSS, are attempting to take it away. Tens of thousands of police and paramilitary personnel had been deployed in Delhi to handle the protest, turning the national capital into a city of barricades, he said.

CPI(M) Odisha State Committee has strongly condemned the arrests of Dr. Randall Sequeira, who has served Adivasi communities in Kalahandi and Rayagada for years, and Laxman Naik, a prominent Dalit youth leader of the Maa Mati Mali Surakhya Manch, for opposing corporate mining projects in the Sijimali and Kutrumali hills of Odisha. The arrests, marked by serious allegations of illegal detention and procedural violations, are part of a campaign of state repression against Adivasi and Dalit communities defending their Jal, Jangal, Jameen. More than a hundred people have been jailed, with numerous criminal cases filed against those resisting mining projects linked to Vedanta and the Adani Group. The CPI(M) Odisha State Committee has demanded the immediate release of all jailed activists, withdrawal of politically motivated cases, an independent judicial inquiry into police action, and an end to repression. The Odisha Government must respect the constitutional rights of affected communities, uphold the Fifth Schedule, PESA and the Forest Rights Act, and ensure that their voices and consent are not overridden to serve corporate interests. The democratic struggle to protect Jal, Jangal, Jameen cannot be criminalised. Solidarity with the people resisting corporate plunder!

The amendments notified to the Census Rules by the Union Home Ministry must be withdrawn at once. An all-party consultation on Census methodology must be held immediately. The Census must not become the next SIR in the hands of Modi - Amit Shah - Mohan Bhagwat.
The Union Home Ministry’s amendments to the Census Rules are not as innocuous as they might seem at first glance. The newly notified amendments open up enumerator roles to private school teachers, members of “institutions, societies and trusts,” and any person deemed “suitable” by the concerned State Government or Union territory administration. This is a means of ensuring backdoor entry to the Sangh Parivar to access the private data of Indian citizens. On 24 August, I had submitted a memo on behalf of CPI(M) to the Registrar General and Census Commissioner demanding that personal details sought in the notified questionnaire for the second phase, such as Aadhaar, voter ID, passport, mobile number, details of bank accounts, and religion and birth place of parents, not be collected. The memo also called for strict safeguards against linking Census data with other databases. Deploying Sangh Parivar agents to collect individual details that do not serve the Census purpose will weaponise the Census exercise for citizenship determination and electoral exclusion. The fact that the Modi government is going ahead with this in the midst of a nationwide upheaval against the SIR process shows its blatant disregard for public sentiment and constitutional norms. This cannot be allowed. The notified amendments must be withdrawn, and an all-party consultation on Census methodology must be held immediately. The Census must not become the next SIR in the hands of Modi - Amit Shah - Mohan Bhagwat.

Member of Parliament John Brittas, leader of the CPI(M)’s Parliamentary Party in the Rajya Sabha, has written to President Droupadi Murmu and Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi, seeking urgent intervention to resolve the ongoing indefinite hunger strike by JNU students, which entered its 16th day on October 18. In his letter to the President, Comrade John Brittas invoked her role as Visitor of Jawaharlal Nehru University under the JNU Act, 1966, and urged her to intervene to secure the revocation of rustication orders against elected JNUSU representatives, withdrawal of objectionable provisions of the Chief Proctor’s Office (CPO) Manual, and an expeditious resolution of the students’ outstanding grievances. In his letter to the Union Education Minister, he sought urgent action to address the prolonged impasse and the deteriorating health of the protesting students. He urged the Minister to take up the matter with the JNU administration and ensure the restoration of meaningful dialogue and democratic participation on campus. Comrade Brittas highlighted that JNU’s founding principles include social justice, secularism and a democratic way of life. Drawing on his own experience as a former JNU student, he stressed that students must be able to express their views, question arbitrary decisions and raise legitimate grievances without fear of punitive action. He called for urgent intervention to safeguard the health and welfare of the hunger-striking students, uphold their democratic rights and protect the democratic and institutional principles on which JNU was founded.

Seminars on “Political Witch Hunt by Central Agencies” were organised by the AKG Centre for Research and Studies in Thiruvananthapuram and the Keluettan Centre for Study and Research in Kozhikode, Keralam. AAP leader and former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, journalist and activist Prabir Purkayastha, and CPI(M) Kerala State Secretary MV Govindan addressed the seminars. Expressing support for the resistance mounted by Keralam and the CPI(M) against the Enforcement Directorate, Manish Sisodia said that the entire country was being forced to live in the shadow of the Enforcement Directorate and that it would be appropriate to rename it ‘Election Dacoits’. Sisodia also thanked the people of Kerala for the support they had extended to him and AAP when they were targeted by central agencies. Noting that the BJP-led Union government was increasingly becoming alienated from the people, Prabir Purkayastha said that the people had understood the value of their rights, including the right to vote, through struggles against the British as part of the national movement and even after Independence. These are not rights they will give up without a struggle, he said.
