Some players impress you with speed.
Derek Trucks makes you feel something.
His slide playing has this rare quality — every note seems to carry weight. There’s no wasted motion, no showing off. Just pure tone, phrasing, and emotion. When he leans into a note, it feels like the guitar is speaking.
In a time when a lot of modern guitar is about how many notes you can fit in a bar, Trucks reminds you that one well-placed note can still say more.
Curious where you stand…
Does Derek Trucks belong in the conversation for most soulful living guitarist?
