Not to be sincere on the TL but my friend is autistic, and she was venting to me about how upset she is that people are refusing to vaccinate their kids just because "they would never want their kid to be like me" and when she said that my heart broke into a billion fuckin pieces

Just… August in higher ed.
Turns out all I needed to fall back in love with student affairs was time away and a staff that just *gets* me. 🥰💜💛

Tomorrow is Day 1 of my first res life training in about 4 years, and I was hired two days after pro staff training started and missed a lot, so RIP to me 😅✌️

someone asked why I dislike "folx" instead of "folks" and the x is so othering. Folks is already gender neutral and encompassing, the x becomes this fully dehumanizing metaphor.

More often than not, I’d plan on “scrounging” for food at my graduate assistantship, which was code for “hope to god the catered events had leftovers or that someone brought in bagels.” I didn’t eat from 10am-9pm many days, aside from tea or candy from people’s desk stashes.

The UVM Prism Center was many times the only source of food I had. I’ll always be grateful for the staff there that always asked me if I had been eating and offered me oatmeal or soup from their food pantry to warm up and fill my belly.

I still constantly feel guilty for eating well when we get groceries for the house. I still subconsciously feel like I have to ration food, even though it’s not a concern anymore. Grad school was traumatizing for me for a lot of reasons, but I feel like this’ll stick the longest.
I had a K-12 job interview this morning and was asked how I would help an autistic student mid-meltdown. I disclosed I’m autistic - something I would *never* do unless I feel it’s necessary. I was not only praised - I was thoroughly supported AND offered the job on the spot. 😭

One thing I made sure to highlight in my response was how offering sensory breaks and wellness checks throughout a school day helps *every student* - not just the neurodivergent ones. (Shoutout to @JasonCGarvey and @taballysingh for implementing this in HESA classrooms!)

I wish I had teachers as a kid who valued centering personhood and physical and sensory wellness before attending to educational needs. I probably would’ve actually been able to learn. I’m gonna be running off this glimmer of hope for a while.

THREAD: I lived in Wisconsin my entire life (til college). I’ve gone to school when the windchill is -30. Mom didn’t make me bring a winter jacket until the temperature hit single digits. But now I live in Fort Worth, TX.
