War Secretary Pete Hegseth may face an impeachment vote before the next Congress is seated, as some Republicans, led by Rep. Thomas Massie, are planning to vote on an impeachment resolution after a stunning midterm loss that is widely attributed to the Iran war. Massie previously introduced articles of impeachment against Hegseth back in September. DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa just handed the governor’s office to Democrat Rob Sand after he beat Republican Zach Lahn by roughly 11 points, taking approximately 55.49% of the vote compared to Lahn’s 44.51%, in a state Donald Trump carried by 13 points 2 years earlier. Sand, the state auditor and the only Democrat holding statewide office, becomes the first Democrat elected governor since Chet Culver in 2006, and ends more than a decade of Republican control of the office that Kim Reynolds left open by not running again. He did it with record-breaking fundraising that topped $37 million this cycle, including roughly $11.5 million from his wife Christine and her Lauridsen family fortune, plus major checks from out-of-state donors such as LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, George Soros’ son Jonathan Soros, along with millions from the Democratic Governors Association. Zach Lahn conceded while telling supporters the fight to preserve Iowa’s culture, safe communities, and multi-generational farms was just beginning, and that they would see him again in 4 years, hinting that his time in Iowa politics is not yet finished. Sand’s ran on a platform that undercuts the policies many Iowans just spent years supporting. He is now tasked with working with a Republican legislature, which is now roughly 56-44 in the House and 32-18 in the Senate after Democratic gains. Sand’s win shows that out-of-state and family money can still buy a victory in a red state, but it also hands the veto pen and executive orders to a Democrat whose agenda runs against the voters who kept the legislature in GOP hands. Iowa’s future is now loaded with plenty of uncertainty. Whether Iowans will come to regret this outcome remains to be seen.
