There’s something special about being part of something bigger than yourself. Something that asks you to put aside your own interests, commit to something greater, and understand that the journey was never just about you. In today’s day and age, that seems to be getting harder to find and even harder to embrace. The players, coaches, and parents who do it best eventually look back and realize that the greatest part of the experience wasn’t always the wins, the recognition, or the individual accomplishments. It was the journey. It was the relationships built, the adversity overcome, the lessons learned, and the memories made along the way. It was learning to put the team first, sacrifice for one another, and understand that you were part of something bigger than yourself. The real reward of team athletics isn’t just what you accomplish together. It’s who you become along the way and the people who share that journey with you. One day, you’ll look back and realize just how special it was to be part of something bigger than yourself.

If you choose the goal, you also have to choose the work that comes with it. If you want to be great, you don’t get to decide each day whether great effort is necessary. You already made that decision when you set the goal. If you commit to the goal, commit to the cost.

Tom Brady nails mental toughness. “Mental toughness is putting all that BS aside. All that noise. All that hype. And just focusing on what you need to do.” It’s easy to get caught up in things you can’t control. Simple to say. Hard to do.

You know what holds a lot of athletes back? Worrying too much about what everyone else is getting. One thing I learned over 20 years of coaching: The players who improved the most weren’t always the most talented. They were the ones who stopped worrying about what they weren’t getting and started making the most of what they had. Tom Brady nails it here. Control your attitude. Bring energy. Be prepared. The moment you stop pointing fingers and start looking in the mirror is the moment you start getting better. Video via @JoshChambers from @sticktofootball podcast; @WeAreTheOverlap (2026)

Dabo Swinney shares his mindset on toughness and why smooth hands don't get rings. "I love the Rocky movies, man. We live modern, but we train old." "That's a mindset so that you don't lose the perspective." Then he said something every team needs to hear: "You just fall in love with the grind. It's a grind, and you gotta love it." You can't be successful if you just love the results and hate the process. You have to show up and earn it every day. "Our strength coach always says, 'They don't put championship rings on smooth hands.' You gotta put the work in." "The quality of the construction is based on the commitment of the crew...You gotta have guys and coaches and staff that are committed. That's my job every year: to make sure that we have that in place." There are no shortcuts, you have to show up and do the work. • It means commitment. • It means toughness. • It means sacrifice.

If you’re looking for excuses, you’ll always find them. I love KOC’s message here. Every team faces adversity. Injuries. Mistakes. Bad breaks. The best teams don’t waste time making excuses. They take ownership, find solutions, and move forward.

Champions have an exceptional will. But they’re also exceptionally willing. More willing to do the extra work. More willing to make sacrifices More willing to accept hard coaching. More willing to hold themselves to the standard when nobody is watching. Everybody wants the result. Champions accept the responsibility. Your will means little until your willingness proves it.

Nick Saban said, "Everybody talks about leadership, but I think it's also important how many guys on a team need to be led." The best teams are player-led and have multiple team leaders. • They own the process. • They lead the process. • They hold each other accountable.

Growth happens when we get back to work. If we use our time to train and improve, we set ourselves up for success the next time out. Focus forward. #TheTexasWay #WeAreOne

When Tony Elliott was four years old a truck hit him. Broken ribs, a punctured lung, a torn spleen. When he was nine, his family was driving to church outside Anaheim, California, and a car ran a red light. His mother Patricia did not survive that morning. Tony was not wearing a seat belt and he walked away without a scratch. Here is what he has said about it. "When you lose your mother on the way to church when you are nine years old, you don't understand." His parents had separated when he was five. His father went to prison. He got out, and about a month later he was locked up again. Tony and his sister Brandi went to an aunt and uncle in Atlanta who could not afford to keep both of them. So the two of them were split up. He ended up in Charleston, South Carolina, with his Aunt Blondale, who raised him alongside her own two sons. He got his sister back before his senior year of high school. He played at James Island High School. He had a few small school offers and an appointment to the Air Force Academy. He spent a year at the Academy prep school and left. He has said he went for the wrong reasons. So he bagged groceries at Publix. He worked construction for 8 dollars an hour, twelve hour shifts. Then he applied to three colleges. Georgia, South Carolina and Clemson. Clemson took him with no conditions. He walked on to the football team. As a freshman he broke his arm against Georgia Tech and missed five games. He earned a scholarship anyway. He graduated with an industrial engineering degree and a 3.55. He became a captain of the Clemson Tigers. As a senior he caught 23 passes. Then he went and got a real job as an engineer at Michelin. And he quit it. He volunteered at a high school, then went and coached receivers at South Carolina State, then at Furman. Then Dabo Swinney called him about the Clemson running backs job. Years before that, at a coaching clinic, Elliott had driven Swinney out to the intersection in Anaheim where his mother was lost. That intersection is on Sycamore Street. Swinney had him over to the house for homemade chili and offered him the job right there. Swinney's house is on Sycamore Street. He coached at Clemson for a decade. Two national championships. In 2017 they handed him the Broyles Award, which goes to the best assistant coach in the country. Then Virginia hired him. In his first three seasons the Virginia Cavaliers won 11 games total. Last season they won 11 in a single year. The most in the history of the school, and the first double digit season there since 1989. They made him the ACC Coach of the Year. Virginia is 3 and 2 right now and just got beat 38 to 7 at Florida State. Nothing is fixed and nobody is pretending it is. But tonight is the 101st Homecoming game at Scott Stadium, against Syracuse. And the man standing on that sideline used to bag groceries for a living.

“It doesn’t matter what everybody says, what everybody else thinks. It only matters in what we believe and what we do,” @CoachVenables The process doesn’t care about your ranking or reputation. It only responds to your standards and consistent commitment to growth.
