Dear Future Hendrix,
Happy 12 years of Monster. I genuinely donβt think you understand what Codeine Crazy did to me. That song didnβt just come out on October 28, 2014, it found me and it stayed. I was in one of the darkest places Iβve ever been in my life when I first heard it. You took all that pain, all that lean, all that heartbreak after everything fell apart, and you turned it into the most honest thing Iβd ever heard. It felt like you were talking directly to me. Like you somehow knew exactly how empty everything felt and decided to leave the door open so I wouldnβt have to sit in it alone.
Iβve played that song more times than I can count. Late nights in my car with the volume all the way up, just sitting there while the rest of the world kept moving. Those four verses became pieces of my life. Every time the hook comes back around and you say youβre going codeine crazy, it still hits the same. It still feels like youβre personally checking on me. That song has gotten me through nights I genuinely didnβt think I was gonna make it past. It saved me more than once. Iβm not even exaggerating. When nothing else worked, Codeine Crazy did. It still does.
Watching you put Monster out after everything you went through that year, and then closing it with something that raw and that vulnerable, changed the way I look at music forever. You didnβt have to give us that much of yourself. You couldβve kept it surface-level like everybody else. But you didnβt. You gave us the realest version of you and it ended up becoming the soundtrack to a lot of people surviving. Iβve got so many memories attached to that song now. Specific nights. Specific feelings. Specific times I had to remind myself that if you could put that pain on a record and keep going, then I could too.
Thank you for Monster. Thank you for Codeine Crazy. Thank you for every late-night verse, every moment you decided to be honest instead of perfect, and every time your music showed up when I needed it most. I hope you know how many of us are still here because of you. I love you forever, Future. The greatest to ever do it. My goat forever.
