In April 2001 a calf born on Good Friday lay for five days under the bodies of her mother and the rest of the herd the government had just killed, eating the straw off the floor, and when the farmer found her alive the Ministry of Agriculture announced that she had to die. Clarence Farm was 35 acres in Devon, with 15 cattle and 30 sheep on it. None of them had foot and mouth. They were killed because they lived next door to a farm that did. That was the contiguous cull: the disease was found on one farm and the animals on the farms around it were killed as well, sick or not. The model behind it came out of Imperial College, from Roy Anderson and a young epidemiologist called Neil Ferguson. The government took it up in March, and from then on the army and the ministry vets were going through the countryside at up to 92,000 animals a day. Farmers chained their gates and stood behind them. The pyres burned on hillsides from Cumbria to Devon, and in some villages the smoke closed the school. Philip and Michaela Board's white calf was a week old. The vets had been and gone, and somehow she had not been finished off. She was found curled against her dead mother. The vets tested her and found no disease at all. A ministry spokesman said: "Phoenix has to die. This stand will not alter what we have to do." The Boards ordered the vets off the farm. They had named her Phoenix. The newspapers put her on the front page, and the National Farmers' Union, which had backed the slaughter from the start, said that killing her would make Herod look like a humanitarian. Within 48 hours Downing Street announced that she would live. Within days the policy changed with her. Healthy cattle on neighbouring farms could now be spared if the vet judged them safe. The government called it a refinement. By the end, more than 6 million animals had been killed for a disease confirmed on 2,026 farms. The chief of the government's own animal disease laboratory at Pirbright called mass culling scientifically unsound. By July, Ferguson was telling Reuters that the three-kilometre and local sheep culls had had some effect but were not particularly efficient policies. Nineteen years later Ferguson's model told the government to lock the country down. Every hill farmer who lived through 2001 remembers the smell. The calf that survived it is the only reason anyone in Westminster ever had to look a healthy animal in the face before signing it off.

Three years. Seven nurses. A costly court battle. All to establish that women should be able to get changed for work - without a male colleague present. County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust has finally updated its policy to require staff to use changing rooms according to biological sex, with unisex alternatives available. A welcome change. But why did these nurses have to fight their own employer for it? And who will be held accountable for putting them through that? Read story below 👇

Walker: "I nearly bought a wool jumper in town. £140. Nice work if you can get it." Farmer: "I got about £2 for the fleece." Walker: "£2?" Farmer: "Per sheep, per year. Clipped it off her in two minutes, rolled it, bagged it, drove it to the depot. The cheque for the whole flock didn't cover the diesel." Walker: "Then who's getting the £140?" Farmer: "Not me, not the shearer. He costs me more per sheep than the wool fetches. I pay to have it taken off." Walker: "So you lose money shearing." Farmer: "Every year. And I can't not shear, or she cooks in July and the flies eat her alive. The wool's a welfare job that used to be an income." Walker: "Sell it yourself, then. Cut out the middleman." Farmer: "Not allowed. By law it goes through the board. Has done since 1950. I can keep a fleece for the wife to knit with, and that's about the extent of my freedom." Walker: "So where does it go?" Farmer: "Washed in Bradford, if we're lucky. Shipped to China, spun, knitted, shipped back, and sold to you with a label about heritage. By the time it's in the window there are eleven people between us and I'm the only one who met the sheep." Walker: "That's mad." Farmer: "My grandfather paid the rent on the wool cheque. I pay a man to take it away. Same sheep, same hill, same jumper in the window. Only the price of the farmer went down." Walker: "What would fix it?" Farmer: "You buying the jumper. And asking them where the other £138 went."

(Amanda) This thing I am sitting in is called a 'sieve'. Betty puts compost in it and shakes it so all the lumps disappear. I just thought I would try it out and see if it was comfortable. It was! Betty told me that I am easily pleased. I don't know what she means.

The International Olympic Committee has scrapped its Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Commission. The group of gender ideologists that inflicted so much damage on women’s sport has been unceremoniously dismantled. Good. There is no place for fairy tale thinking at any level of sport.

🚨 Breaking: After a three year battle, County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust has finally changed its policy on single-sex spaces for staff to bring it in line with the law. It is amazing how simple it is! Now all NHS Trusts must urgently follow suit. Bethany Hutchison, President of the Darlington Nursing Union and lead claimant in the case, said: “This short sentence in a policy has taken women three years of fear, humiliation and extraordinary personal sacrifice to secure. “We were nurses asking for the most basic protection: somewhere private and safe to undress at work, away from members of the opposite sex. Instead of listening, the Trust told us to compromise, broaden our mindset and be more inclusive. We were forced out of our own changing room, placed in inadequate facilities, threatened with disciplinary action and made to fear for our jobs and professional careers. “Vulnerable colleagues were put under intolerable pressure. International nurses feared losing their visas. Women who had experienced domestic abuse were left distressed and afraid. Four of us were reported to our professional regulator simply for speaking publicly about what was happening. “Throughout it all, the Trust defended a policy it had been warned was unlawful. Even after the Supreme Court clarified the law, it refused to change course. It took a full tribunal judgment, an apology, damages and an enormous bill before the Trust finally wrote biological reality into its policy. “We welcome this change because it will protect women across the Trust, but it should never have required a three-year legal battle. No nurse should ever again be treated as we were for asking for dignity, privacy and safety.” See more breaking in the Daily Express and with @CConcern and the Christian Legal Centre who have supported the nurses from the beginning. express.co.uk/news/uk/226004… christianconcern.com/ccpress…

Nobody in the Ice Age lived on berries, and nobody chased rabbits for a living, and if our ancestors had followed the evidence-based diet none of us would be here to be told about it. It's northern Europe, 30,000 years ago, October. Grass to the horizon, a wind off the ice sheet that hasn't stopped since the summer, a line of willow along the river. The healthy-eating poster says five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. The berries were three weeks in August and the birds had most of them. The roots are the size of a thumb, bitter, and an hour of digging gets a handful that needs cooking before it stops trying to poison anyone. The grass is grass, and a human has one stomach for it. The poster says wholegrains. There's a wild grass seed the size of a flea, four months off, and a day of threshing it with a flat stone makes a cupful. The poster says choose lean protein. So the hare. Two hours of running for a kilo of meat with no fat on it, and a fortnight of hares leaves the body sick, weak and hungrier than it started, because protein with nothing to burn it with makes the body eat itself. The poster, read faithfully, has killed the tribe by December, and the dietitian who wrote it would have been eaten first, on account of being the only one with any fat on him. Across the river there's a herd of bison, and behind them horses, and twice a year the reindeer come through in their thousands, and now and then a mammoth that is, on its own, a village's winter. Big, slow in the cold, walking the same path to the same water every evening, carrying a layer of fat on their backs that renders into something that keeps in a skin for months. The marrow keeps in the bone. The brain is fat. The hump is fat. One kill feeds forty people for weeks and the fire does the rest. The people who lived there looked at the bitter roots, the hare, and a thousand kilos of dinner strolling to the river at the same time every evening, and they made the choice that put a brain in your skull. Nobody who ate the roots left descendants to write guidelines. The diet that would have wiped us out by Christmas is now on a poster in every surgery in the country, with a government logo on it, and the people handing it out are descended from the ones who ignored it.

Excuse me! It’s Ron here. Baby Dog asked me (as his Deputy) to keep an eye on Malcy whilst he had a nap, because Malcy is on new medicine. So I did just that. Trouble is, I think Malcy was a bit confused about why I was keeping an eye on him? (Music sung by the children in Mum’s musical theatre class) ❤️

The Woman of the Day is the Anglo-Saxon noblewoman Godgifu of West Mercia, the only woman to remain a landholder in Britain after those robbing Normans swept in and stole everything that wasn’t nailed down (and quite a few things that were). Of course you’ve heard of her. You’ve heard of the Godiva Procession which was instituted in 1678 by Coventry Fair to commemorate the legendary ride by the Lady. Taking pity on the people of Coventry suffering grievously under her husband's oppressive taxation, she called his bluff that he would repeal the taxes if she would strip naked and ride through the streets of the town, clothed only in her long hair. She only agreed on the condition that everyone stayed indoors and shut their windows, but a tailor known ever afterwards as Peeping Tom disobeyed and was struck blind. Allegedly. It was all bunkum. Absolute bunkum. Lady Godiva’s real name was Godgifu. She married Leofric, Earl of Mercia, but both she and her husband were major philanthropists and among the most munificent of the Anglo-Saxon nobility until the Norman Conquest in 1066 (and those robbing Normans came along, etc). In Anglo-Saxon times, in laws dated around 1008 AD, women enjoyed full property rights, from peasant to nobility. They could own land, farms, houses. Upon marriage, a husband was legally required to give his wife a Morgengifu (Morning Gift): land, money, or goods, which remained her independent property that she could sell, give away, or manage as she chose. Women wrote their own wills and left property to whomever they chose including children, servants, or religious institutions, and they didn’t need their husband's permission. All that stopped after 1066. The new feudal system tied land ownership to military service, something women were barred from providing. Women became the chattels (property) of their husbands if they were married, or their fathers if they were not, a legal state known as coverture. Still, I’m sure the Normans thought they were being progressive and inclusive, two words I’ve come to loathe. But I digress. Godgifu survived the death of her husband and was mentioned in the Domesday Book, one of the few Anglo-Saxons and the only woman to remain a major landholder after the Conquest. Godgifu certainly would have ridden a horse but not in protest and certainly not minus her clothes. Still, the idea of it proved quite a crowd pleaser at Coventry Fair in 1678, even though the first fake Lady Godiva was actually a lad. Yes, I know. Some things just don’t change. In the intervening years, the myth was spiced up by the Puritans to prove a moral point but dampened down by other Protestants to make it fit for delicate ears. Never forget: the objectification of women is eternal, along with its fraternal twin, misogyny. The two generally go hand in hand. Despite several attempts to shut down the procession — in 1845, the Mayor got fed up with the crowds jostling to get a better view of her, expostulating, “It’s a disgrace”, and in 1854, the Bishop of Worcester protested against “a Birmingham whore being paraded through the streets as Lady Godiva” — it continued as a annual event until the 1960s. Godgifu’s date of birth is unknown but she died in her mid-fifties in 1067 after the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Domesday Book of 1086 notes that the lands formerly held by her had passed to others. Men of course. Chattels are property, and property cannot own property. Married women finally achieved independent taxation in their own right in 1990. Prior to that, their husbands were responsible for paying tax on their income unless she obtained his signature and consent to claim her own single person's allowance and pay tax on her own earnings. Her unearned income — such as investment or savings interest — still legally belonged to him. And of course, the "marital rape exemption" — the legal assumption that a wife could not withhold sexual consent from her husband under the marriage contract — was not formally abolished in English law until 1991. 935 years. It only took 935 years in this country to demolish the legal status and definition of Woman as Property, and despite the Supreme Court ruling, we still find ourselves having to dismantle the definition of Woman as a feeling — with political parties, Civil Service departments, with trade unions, charities, retailers, and with sporting bodies. I know many of us are tired of fighting the same old battles but keep going, sisters. “We woman suffragists have a great mission — the greatest mission the world has ever known. It is to free half the human race, and through that freedom to save the rest.” Emmeline Pankhurst, 17 October 1912.

In November 1941 the richest man in America drove his twenty-three-year-old daughter to a hospital in Washington without telling her mother, had two surgeons drill holes in her skull and cut into the front of her brain while she sang God Bless America to them, and when the singing stopped she had a mental age of two and the family did not speak her name for twenty years. Rosemary Kennedy was the third child and the first girl, and she was slow. A nurse at the birth had held Rose Kennedy's legs together for two hours while they waited for the doctor, and the baby had been starved of air. She learned to read and write, but late, and in a family where the boys were being bred for the presidency and the girls for the right marriage, she was the one who could not keep up, the one who had to be coached and watched and given the simpler part in the photograph. She was also, by every account, the prettiest of them, and when the family went to London in 1938 she was presented at court in a white dress and curtsied to the King without a mistake. Then she was twenty-one, and the trouble started. Moods. Rages. Slipping out of the convent school at night and coming back in the morning and not saying where. The nuns said she might be meeting men. For Joseph Kennedy, who was managing his sons towards the White House and could not have a daughter who might get pregnant or get talked about, that was the end of it. He had read about a new operation. Walter Freeman had promised the newspapers it calmed the agitated, and Joe Kennedy had never in his life been told that a thing he could pay for would not work. Rosemary was given a mild sedative and kept awake. Freeman and his surgeon, James Watts, opened the skull on both sides and Watts pushed a blade into the frontal lobes and swept, while Freeman asked her to recite the Lord's Prayer and sing, and count backwards, so they would know how far to go. They went until she was incoherent. Then they stopped. She came out of it unable to walk or speak. Years of therapy got her a few words and a limp. Joe moved her to a private hospital in New York and then to a convent school in Wisconsin, told the family she was teaching the retarded in the Midwest, and never went to see her. Rose, her mother, was not told what had been done until long after, and did not visit for twenty years. The brothers and sisters, including the one who became President, were told she was away. When Joe had his stroke in 1961 and could no longer manage the story, Eunice went to Wisconsin and found a woman of forty-three who did not know her, and came home and started the Special Olympics. Rosemary lived to eighty-six, in the convent, and died in 2005 with her surviving sisters at the bed. The brother who became President had signed the first federal mental health law in 1963, and the family has said she was the reason. Freeman kept operating for another twenty-six years. His notes on Rosemary have never been released. That is what the expert's confidence looks like when it meets a powerful man with an inconvenient child. The science was published. The father was certain. The daughter sang to the surgeon until she could not. Every institution that has ever decided it knows what is wrong with you and how to tidy it has the same two ingredients in the room, and the person on the table is still the only one who pays.

Because a certain kind of man believes that not getting everything he wants from women is oppression. This applies both to incels and to the type of trans-identified man who insists that speech, laws and physical spaces should be reconfigured around his self-image.
Why is asking for female-only spaces called hateful?
