The fresh calls for a windfall tax on banks in response to HSBC’s higher profits are both predictable and misguided. Six quick points... 🧵 1⃣ UK banks are already more heavily taxed than other businesses, thanks to the 3% surcharge on corporation tax and the additional levy on their balance sheets...

In a recent NYT debate, Paul Kedrosky claimed that 80% of Anthropic revenues come from 8 companies. He claimed Meta alone makes up 10%. As Azeem Azhar pointed out, this concentration was declining over time and we'd have an answer in the S-1. The S-1 tells us: "No single customer represented more than 10% of our revenue for the nine months ended September 30, 2026. Approximately 79% of our revenue came from customers outside of our top five customers for the three months ended September 30, 2026, up from approximately 64% for the three months ended March 31, 2026." So that resolves it. Concentration is below the levels Kedrosky warned of, and falling. nytimes.com/2026/10/16/opini… sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/…

»The UK’s tax problems are “not really about revenue; it’s about structure,” said Alex Mengden, economist at the Tax Foundation, noting that the overall best performers were those with broader bases and lower distortions.«

As a former contributing writer to the AP Stylebook, I'll make a ruling here: it should be "Dans Sullivan" like Surgeons General. Like Attorneys General, or courts martial. xitter.cf/migold/status/21147937…

Wyden just updated his data center tax bill. There's more definition around things @GS_Watson, @DiSalvoPhD, and I had questions on (e.g., who's a "small" data center operator). And still MANY unanswered Qs: tax rate, how bright the lines are between AI and non-AI usage, etc.
My first post @TaxFoundation, with @GS_Watson & @DiSalvoPhD: Sens. Warner and Wyden proposed new, targeted tax increases on data centers. While aimed at voter concerns, each proposal would make the tax code more complex and less neutral, and could drive AI investment overseas.

The context for this piece is US policy, but the same lessons apply in the UK. The corporate income tax exists and windfall profits are part of that tax base even without a special separate levy called a "windfall profits tax" (which the UK already has). taxfoundation.org/blog/big-o…
Nope, that’s not how taxes and price works. The price is determined by demand and supply. Companies charge the highest price they can given demand. A tax levied on *profits* does not affect a company’s cost ie supply. Taxes on *windfall* profits (like oil and gas) are the most efficient kind of tax there is.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Corporate profit taxes do not directly shift marginal costs but empirical studies show partial pass-through into higher consumer prices. Windfall taxes on oil and gas have deterred investment and production in practice despite theoretical efficiency on rents. dadun.unav.edu/server/api/cor… ecb.europa.eu/pub/pdf/scpwps… taxfoundation.org/blog/big-oil-p… scottishfinancialreview.com/2025/09/03/win…

🎉 The 2026 rankings are in! How competitive is your country’s tax code? See how your country compares with our new interactive tool: hubs.ly/Q04BspXV0 The structure of a country’s tax code is a determining factor of its economic performance. A well-structured tax code is easy for taxpayers to comply with and can promote economic development while raising sufficient revenue for a government’s priorities. In contrast, poorly structured tax systems can be costly, distort economic decision-making, and harm domestic economies. The International Tax Competitiveness Index gives a comprehensive overview of how OECD countries’ tax codes compare, explains why certain tax codes stand out as good or bad models for reform, and provides important insight into how to think about tax policy.

Since several have asked, raising the SocSec payroll tax rate to 17% from 12.4% would fill the 75-year shortfall and prevent insolvency. It would also be the kind of middle-income tax increase that neither party favors. ssa.gov/OACT/solvency/provis…

Where is the option for raising payroll taxes on everyone? How much would payroll taxes need to be raised?
