Youโre shipping features, running experiments, and tracking dashboards full of data, but still wondering: Is any of this actually moving the needle?
The data is sobering: Only 10-30% of shipped features create measurable business impact.
Thatโs the messy middle: the gap between everyday work and real business impact. For years, only the biggest companies could solve it by throwing massive resources at the problem.
Now thatโs changing.
Our new interactive manifesto from @danielfschmidt explores how value architecture, powered by data-connected metric trees, makes it possible for any team to connect their work directly to business outcomes and finally see where value is really created.

Connecting two seemingly disparate things can sometimes yield profound insights. Listen to @danielfschmidt talk about 'The Act of Creation' and learn why connecting your short-term inputs to your long-term outcomes is a great place to start for Tech. executives.
The field of management is inherently multidisciplinary, and integrating ideas & insights from other fields has the potential to profoundly transform it.
In my 23 years of corporate experience, I committed so many mistakes and category errors just by embracing the prevalent management practices without thinking. But, this is not surprising!
It took us over 5000 years to apply the concept of โwheelsโ to luggage. This underscores our human tendency to be โdomain dependentโ. We often struggle to transfer insights and solutions across different disciplines, even if the application seems obvious in retrospect.

Do you experience what @danielfschmidt calls the "messy middle," where many people doing the essential work โ engineering, design, marketing โ struggle to understand how their work fits into the bigger picture of the business?
Does your work often feel driven by the whims or intuitions of those above you?
What can Tech. Executives do about it?

This weekโs Cyb3rSyn Newsletter summarizes the key highlights of the inaugural Cyb3rSyn Labs Podcast episode - my conversation with @danielfschmidt, the Founder of DoubleLoop.
I wanted the first episode of the Cyb3rSyn Labs Podcast to be at the intersection of the ideas that we discuss in the Cyb3rSyn Community (Systems Thinking, Complexity, Cybernetics) and Entrepreneurship - I couldnโt think of anyone better than Daniel!
Danielโs startup, DoubleLoop, helps product development teams to build products in ways that embrace the insights from these fields to avoid the typical pitfalls of the mainstream.
Topics Discussed:
โ
Focus on Input Variables
โ
Messy Middle & Aligned Autonomy
โ
Outcome-Oriented Product Development
and much more...

Lessons from also a ~decade of angel investing: this is totally off-base.
Unless they catch lightning in a bottle the first try (rare), the ones who just want to be rich will give up after the going gets hard. Because if you just want to make a bunch of money, your least risky path to do that is to join FAANG or a derisked late stage startup. Itโs by far the highest EV path and if you cared about retirement money, youโd just defect to that path.
While thereโs obviously no universal consensus, most founders & investors would agree that as long as signs point in the right direction โ if you can still see the light at the top of the mountain โ the most important thing is to stay in the game.
So then โ the predictor of startup success is the answer to the question: what is most likely to keep you in the game longer? Thatโs what you should optimize for.
A few things Iโve seen, in order:
1. Being mission-oriented / desire to make a difference
2. Relentless desire to solve a specific problem for personal reasons (more personal the reason the better)
3. Desire to put a dent in the universe
4. Self-aware stubbornness (ie tenacity)
โBeing right / fame / gloryโ is not a negative. Desire to be right is often correlated with tenacity โ that isnโt a detractor. Desire to put a dent in the universe is actually strongly correlated with a desire for glory.
But by far the best predictor is mission-orientation and desire for impact. NOT the desire to be rich.

Ever felt helpless looking at your business dashboard? It's not just you. The problem might be that your metrics are divorced from the actual work. #BusinessIntelligence #DataDriven

My iconoclastic opinion of the day is that most BI tools don't make it easy enough to "model the business."
Instead, gravity of the UX pulls you toward transforming, exploring, and presenting data aggregates.

There's a lot of discussion around what truly classifies as a startup. I'll throw this into the ring:
When you see a stripe payment for the largest yearly contract to date and spend 3 hours making sure there's not any bugs in the billing system.
