This is going to look real silly when the GPU guys start buying lawyers
We’re not aware of any law firm going to this extreme. For example Latham is buying GPUs but is also firm-wide on Harvey and we announced a deeper partnership today. We think that’s the right strategy and what matters more than build vs buy is how heavily a firm is investing in AI. The best way to invest is a portfolio approach of working closely with vertical vendors and the labs and cloud providers while also self-building with open source and the frontier ecosystem. Everything is moving too fast and law firms are too complex for a single binary approach like this post suggests. Law firms will not rely on a single vendor nor will they build the entire stack themselves. My view is that longer term the labs and clouds will build general intelligence infrastructure and vertical players will help customize it for each industry. Then individual firms will leverage their unique data, human expertise and workflows to build differentiated AI to better compete against their peers and serve their clients. Our goal is to build the trusted vertical layer and open it up through APIs so firms can build everything from custom models and context layers to agents and products with us. And most importantly do it in a way they can trust that their data and their clients’ data is safe and only used for their benefit.

Saving? They’re piloting Harvey, Legora and Spellbook in parallel plus on a $1,000,000 monthly token run rate with Claude. Rates are going up and law firms are evaluating how to disburse token costs to matters.
Law firms are going to be forced to pass on to clients the savings they’re realizing from AI or else they will soon be annihilated by AI native firms. Most obvious play in AI right now.

“Negotiate this deal for me. Don’t lose.”
Prediction: By 2035 agents will negotiate more deals per year than humans. AI native businesses will be 10x faster, with much higher transaction volumes. Agent-to-agent negotiation will be the only way to keep up.

If you’re a law firm trialling different Registry Services products for due diligence searches let me know. I’ll personally buy a search product on a competitive platform for you and then you can try ours. Also, take your time to decide, it’s no rush. We’ll be here for you when you’re ready.
Harvey is now offering a lower price to customers who promise not to trial a competitor. Not very customer-friendly!

I’m going to offer a discount to anyone trialing MinuteBox if they also trial a competitor. We want fully informed customers. Also, we tend to close faster once someone has spent time with our more transactional competitors.

Very common experience across many domains but particularly painful in law due to the billable hour making it hurt twice. Once when you get the conflicting advice and again when you get billed for both.
I had a lawyer say he was traveling and his associate would meet with me. The associate met with me and very confidently gave me advice for half an hour. Later, I got an email from the partner and the associate giving me complete opposite advice. I got billed for the associate call, the associate partner call, and the email exchange where I asked them “WTF is going on? Which advice is true?”

There has always been great open source software. People actually prefer using opinionated and well-crafted software. That’s why “shareware” always won with end-users. The euphemism here is calling this “de facto open source,” which is another way of saying all software will be quickly copied and ripped off by swarms of agents like we saw this week with Adobe. The difference is that the swarms of agents and those using them don’t have the craft or opinions that make the software they are copying great in the first place and so they will always be following and not leading. The leaders with great craft will still win.
What’s happening in the AI-powered reverse engineering and decompilation is absolutely insane. Pretty soon all software will be de facto open-source. AI is coming for everything and everyone.

AI maximalism is rooted in the unprecedented rate of improvement, not the current state.* *though I disagree about the current state. Astounds me every day.
the thing i don't get about the AI maximalist story is I continually find that LLMs are just not very creative at all in any domain every time I give Astra some task to hill climb over night, I come back the next morning and it is basically stuck in a local minimum then i'm like "try this obvious thing" and it improves by 50% in 15 minutes

Who is working on this for the legal vertical?
Your next meeting comes with a note-taker who can help with the follow-up. The Meetings plugin takes notes for you and saves a personalized summary and next steps in ChatGPT Space, based on what ChatGPT knows about you and the work you’ve done together. Keep notes private or share them with your team, then ask ChatGPT to update a project plan or draft a follow-up. Available in beta for Pro and Business users in the ChatGPT desktop app on macOS. Enterprise is coming soon. Download the desktop app, then search for “Meetings” in the plugin directory. chatgpt.com/download/
