My latest for @axios, I looked into the impact of COVID on red states vs blue states w/ @caitlinnowens. Chart reads like a self-contained history of the pandemic. axios.com/coronavirus-pandem…

🚨I wrote about public health’s history; why it spent the 20thC moving away from broad coalitions, political advocacy, and a crusading spirit that actively pushed for social reforms; and why it must regain those things to be relevant and effective. 1/ theatlantic.com/health/archi…

People keep saying that vaccine hesitancy, or vaccine resistance, is causing people to not get vaccinated. That’s true, but it’s not so simple. There are still major access barriers that are making it hard for people to get shots even if they want them. buff.ly/3CHyHRQ
Cloud Budgets are hard. Ternary makes them simple. Ternary is the world’s first native FinOps cloud cost optimization tool. Built for Google Cloud on Google Cloud. ternary.app @FinOpsFdn @GCPcloud

@ML_does_ML describes Melvin, a chatbot she created using a CNN for binary classification that can distinguish between images of jellyfish and topology, that can also show pictures of beautiful jellyfish upon request! @RLadiesNYC #rstats

@emilyahalford uses Google trends data and the gtrendsR package to understand the impact of covid-19 on suicidality and suicide risk factors. She used ARIMA to compare observed search behavior to predicted search behavior (assume no Covid). Fascinating talk! @RLadiesNYC #rstats

@Yoli_Barron first tried to calculate a comorbidity index among Covid-19 patients in SAS, but ran into some trouble, and discovered the comorbidity R package! This package can use both ICD9/ICD10 codes! It also works well with haven and tableone. @RLadiesNYC #rstats

@isabelizimm uses the iml library for model explainability. Model explainability approaches are focused on the model's output, and are useful for gaining insights, but aren't going to fully solve the problem you are trying to solve. @RLadiesNYC #rstatsnyc

@jtrnyc shows how to create a bookdown book in 5 minutes, so students can turn their final projects into a book! This process minimizes frustration and simplifies the workflow. See github.com/jtr13/bookdown-te… for details, and youtube.com/watch?v=m5D-yoH4… for video! @RLadiesNYC #rstats

@thesparemoments demonstrates how to use rvest to do webscraping. Great to know that rvest will retrieve AND parse data, unlike BeautifulSoup which only parses data. Using the SelectorGadget Chrome extension helps set the right html_node. @RLadiesNYC #rstats

@MeiGuan_ is a self-described aspiring birder who explored whether NYC was more attractive to tourist birds this spring, given the stay-at-home order. She used bioRad to extract biological scans from radar data, to calculate bird migration traffic rate. @RLadiesNYC #rstats

@WireMonkey used the palmerpenguins data to demonstrate how to produce batch reports in RMarkdown, all done with just .R and .Rmd files. This is Alyssa's first @RLadiesNYC talk (and it was excellent!). #rstats
