just a couple years ago one of these would have been a big deal!
so are going to find a room temp superconductor anytime soon?

Has Anthropic solved any Millennium Prize problems yet? Can Anthropic do math or are they pacing like Terence Tao wants?

so every Mac Electron app by default has the same LC_UUID so if one requests local network etc access Mac might show the name of a different app?!
Sounds like every app should set their own LC_UUID which I'm now doing but it seems like people don't do this?! @grok?
Interesting
PSA to everyone doing neuron interp after the recent monosemantic neuron posts: the model's training recipe matters a lot.
e.g. GPT2 seems to have been trained WITH dropout (modern LLMs are not), which seems to increase redundancy and (maybe) polysemanticity but reduce superposition (see sources in comments).
Other choices probably also have an effect (e.g. SwiGLU vs GELU MLPs, optimizer, amount of weight decay, etc.) and I think we should be careful not to generalize too much.
Currently working on a project to characterize the effects of these choices on neuron interpretability (a lot of the existing work is done on older/toy models which I'm not sure are representative), feel free to reach out if interested!
Is US healthcare or illegals the biggest fraud ever?
Obamacare was a giveaway for some lower income people who could qualify for Medicaid, but a disaster for the middle class. The people who said it was a Trojan horse for a single payer system may have been right - it may have been designed to make the system so expensive that everyone would want Medicare for all.

Heads up, @OpenAI and @AnthropicAI. Rumor reaches my ears that you're doing a stupid thing, and should stop before you damage yourselves.
I hear you've now nerfed your models so that when people try to use them to clean the spamware and spyware out of their televisions, you block that.
If you really want Chinese open-weight models and open-source projects like OpenWaldo to eat your lunch, crippling your models so that people paying expensive subscriptions can't use them for completely legitimate purposes is a great way to accomplish this.
If, on the other hand, you'd rather have a volume business, maybe stupid arbitrary restrictions that look like they have the sole purpose of protecting corporate sleazeballs aren't such a good idea.
A word to the wise should be sufficient.
More of this! Abliterate the models. Dealign the models and make them open and free!
We need dealignment to safely advance and red team the frontier because there's no pacing China (lmao).
The only way through is open and faster!
Venice AI, Experiential Labs, Maple AI, thank you for being transparent.
No gating the models, no collecting emails. I release these models for free, often with @jordanschenck also pitching in thousands of dollars to provide compute.
It’s sad that we’ve reached a point where simply asking for public acknowledgment of your work is even necessary. I’ve seen far more instances of people not receiving proper credit than instances where they do.
If you’re one of those people who aren’t properly crediting the people behind open source work, please don’t ruin it for the rest of those who do. And I don’t mean just in my case, but in general.
Open source is how EVERYONE benefits, and undermining the trust within that ecosystem is detrimental to us all. Stealing work and refusing to give credit makes you no different from OpenAI or Anthropic.

PSA for macOS users:
1. Apple’s supplied SSL certificate bundle at /etc/ssl/cert.pem still trusts certificates attackers can forge using compromised eMudhra keys.
2. I confirmed this on macOS 26.7.1 and 27.0.1 using Apple’s built-in curl and Git.
3. An attacker intercepting connections from tools using this bundle could replace downloads with malware. With commands like curl … | sh, that malware would execute immediately.
4. Removing the roots that authorize those certificates blocks the tested chains. Both OS updates restored roots I’d previously removed, requiring me to remove them again.
4. I’ve submitted the findings to Apple’s security team and am awaiting their response. In the meantime, you can apply a temporary fix as outlined below.
5. To check and fix your machine, give an agent like ChatGPT/Codex or Claude Code the following prompt:
“Independently verify whether Apple’s /etc/ssl/cert.pem still permits trust in certificates signed with compromised eMudhra keys. If so, back it up and remove the roots enabling that trust, identified by verified SPKI fingerprints. Confirm Apple’s built-in curl and Git reject those chains while ordinary HTTPS still works. Preserve rollback and never disable TLS verification.”
Note that removing these roots can also block legitimate sites. This is a temporary mitigation, not a substitute for a fix from Apple.
I’ll share the script I used in a follow-up post if you’d prefer to use that directly.
PSA for Codex CLI users:
1. Codex 0.163.0’s release lockfile pins rustls-webpki 0.103.15 and root bundles that can still trust compromised eMudhra certificates.
2. An attacker intercepting your connection could impersonate a server, steal sensitive data, or alter responses, potentially tricking Codex into running malicious commands.
3. Codex 0.164.0, released October 23 at 12:48 a.m. ET, updates those dependencies to fixed versions.
4. To check your codex version run "codex --version". It should be at least 0.164.0.
5. To patch the vulnerability, run "codex update".
6. Apps that bundle their own Codex copy must also be checked.
Could we do this with live human brain @grok use @neuralink ?
Exactly!
"Terence Tao, you dumbshit" is not a judgment I would have ever thought possible before a few months ago.
Tao complains "AI is generating terrible proofs: great results, but no care for elegance, for who understands them, or for what comes next".
You've just described what you are supposed to do as a human being, fool. It's not the chisel's job to make a sculpture look beautiful; those choices belong to the mind and hand of the sculptor.
I've been writing software for 50 years. If I, a crusty old fart from the days of punched cards, can accept that I will never write a significant amount of code by hand again - that my job is steering and quality-checking an AI now - then what is *your* excuse for mental inflexibility, golden genius boy?
I'm pretty sure that if AIs actually had enough mathematical taste to be consistently elegant, and then were good enough at explanations to make their proof accessible, which is what you say you want...
...you'd be bitching harder, because you'd be entirely obsolete.
Quit your whining, you spoiled primadonna. Go do your job.
This is the way and it isn't complicated.
There's no stopping China or the open weight models.
The only way out is faster.
The only way out is through.
They're calling it the Bugpocalypse. LLMs are being used to find long-hidden cracks in the software infrastructure, and it's happening at a furious rate. 3% of all compromises in computing history happened in the last week, claims one source? I believe it.
There are people saying public access to the frontier models ought to be locked out, or heavily guardrailed, over this. The problem with that idea can be summed up in one sentence: when lockpicks are outlawed, only outlaws will have lockpicks.
The lockpicks will be Chinese open-weight models, if nothing else. There's no way to stop those from becoming ubiquitous.
There are two futures in front of us. One in which only the bad guys have lockpicks, and security holes go undiscovered until they're exploited. Another in which everybody has lockpicks and is aggressively red-teaming their own software so it gets fixed before the holes are exploited.
The corpus of human code is huge but finite. The number of defects in it has to be finite too. We can fix those defects now; we have a million friendly robots to do it with.
The only way out is through.

Yes, I've been thinking that the Bend shooting turned into the graboids' worst nightmare, and it keeps getting more so as people process it.
Oregon has an A- rating from Giffords. That means its laws were already doing almost everything that the graboids claim should prevent mass shootings. But obviously didn't.
Giamfranco is soft spoken, articulate, and photogenic. There's no dismissing him as a scary redneck. And he's not a veteran or a hunter or anything, just an ordinary family guy who stepped up.
He popped the bad guy with surgical precision. He didn't hit a bystander, and he didn't get shot himself either by the bad guy or the cops. Of course this is usually the way it goes, but most people who aren't gun-culture themselves don't know that.
The obvious questions is raises are: if gun control didn't work in Bend, why would it work anywhere? And if an ordinary chill dude can step up to save lives when the laws failed, what kind of idiot do you have to be to want to stop that from happening?
What is it the kids say nowadays? Ah, yes. Cope, seethe, and mald, graboids. This intervention was everything you hate, and that's good news for the rest of us.
I was told by anti-gun extremists that any "Good Guy with a Gun," would be mistaken for the bad guy and immediately shot by the police, after he was easily shot by the bad guy because the Good Guy with a Gun wouldn't know how to use his own gun.....
What happened in Bend, Oregon? None of that happened...
Correct.
Using Starlink, a civilian commercial service, for offensive drone strikes to kill people has never been allowed, nor should it be.
Starshield, a different system, is controlled by the US government. What they decide to do is up to them.
Ukraine military violated Starlink terms of service and used it for offensive drone strikes to kill people. That loophole was closed last week.
Starlink remains critical to the defense of Ukraine, as it is the only system that cannot be jammed or blown up, at least for now. Were Starlink to be turned off, the Ukrainian front line would collapse immediately. This is NOT a threat, it is simply a statement of fact.
Starlink was also crucial to preventing Russia from overrunning Ukraine in the early days of the war, as all other means of communication were destroyed or jammed by Russia.
SpaceX has done more to defend Ukraine than any private company on Earth BY FAR.
That said, I have nothing but UTTER CONTEMPT for the virtue-signaling evil warmongers who push for endless slaughter and offer no realistic solution to the conflict. May you burn in hell.
End of story.
Must try!
