check out my new piece on turning @wmata into megaregional social housing authority
Our decisionmakers should take up the mantle of regional megaprojects in the public interest once again, and apply the Great Society feeling that the region successfully stirred up for mid-century transportation planning to today’s housing crisis: ggwash.org/view/98570/after-…

"Price transparency" doesn't really move the needle. It's buying power. Transparency became a meme among conservative healthcare reformers who are unwilling to address the actual structural issues driving healthcare costs — largely because they *like* when costs go up.
Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drugs is a good example of what actually drives change in healthcare costs. His company charges a flat 15% markup on more than 4000 drugs and showing everyone the price. That's it. No new law, no new agency. And his company has forced incumbents to change prices in a way decades of policy never did. So much of our system only works because nobody can see the prices. Transparency is wildly underrated as health policy! nitter.gq/a16z/status/2115456219…

A story in 2 parts
Leticia Gutierrez’s win in TX-9 in the Houston suburbs came seemingly out of nowhere. This is a Trump +20 seat, I don’t think she was recruited by anyone, she wasn’t on Red To Blue, wasn’t backed by any major orgs I know of, and barely anything is known about her.

For years, Klein & pretty much every Democrat's position was that anyone who wins in Michigan has a lot to teach the party. Just two years ago, he said pretty much exactly this as he heaped praise on its governor, Gretchen Whitmer.
You'll be SHOCKED to learn that Ezra Klein thinks Democrats should ignore progressive victories.

if we're going to do avignon papacy in Tennessee there is really only one choice for its home
NEW: In leaked recordings, Peter Thiel argued that Nashville should be a moral alternative to Pope Leo XIV and the Catholic Church, which he called “a dubious ally” against a hypothetical future Antichrist Democratic president. “America is the last and final form of the Roman Empire,” Thiel told a closed-door crowd in Nashville’s Masonic Temple. “There is no successor.” He has attacked Pope Leo XIV at least four times this year, once calling him “a useful idiot for the CCP.” thelettersfromleo.com/p/the-…

DEMOCRATS MUST DELIVER Trumpism grew out of the failure of the Democratic Party to stand with working families. That cannot continue. At a time of unprecedented income and wealth inequality and declining faith in democracy, Democrats MUST deliver. No excuses. - Medicare for All - A $20-an-hour minimum wage - The PRO Act - A wealth tax on billionaires, which would pay for universal childcare, free public colleges and universities, and a massive housing program - An AI data center moratorium - Bringing ICE under control and comprehensive immigration reform - REAL campaign finance reform

Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed on Iran: “There is one person in the world that has been trying to get this war fought for nearly all of our lifetimes. It is the Prime Minister of a foreign government. Gets invited to the Situation Room where he gets to dupe the dumbest fucking guy who ever was president and then now we’re in a war that everybody could’ve told you was a dumb idea to fight”

A Green New Deal for public housing is the straightforward antidote to the policy problems I spell out in my recent TNR story about NYCHA conversions. These are good federal priorities for public housing today: filesforprogress.org/reports…
Backing Jeffries bc he will prioritize public housing. A GND to modernize NYCHA, let’s go!

Why I’d urge caution on declaring the Trump era over. The second term project hasn’t just been about retribution, but also unchecked presidential power — with Miller and Project 2025 its architects. They didn’t really try and sell their agenda to the public. They tried to gerrymander a win before voting started. And they worked hard to empower the executive, and to minimize the role of Congress/Courts altogether. So in a weird, undemocratic way, the WH has been building to this moment for two years.
Trump announces Stephen Miller will become his new chief of staff.

🚨 Stephen Miller — now the new WH Chief of Staff — has repeatedly pushed to target a list of enemies, like Hasan Piker. + He's pushing for a network of "camps" to detain untold numbers of immigrants, indefinitely — ones too hard for a future admin to undo.zeteo.com/p/stephen-miller-t…

I have a plan to get Medicare for All passed. 1. Pass in House and Senate 2. Send Abdul to the Oval Office to meet with Trump 3. Trump examines his body and his ass and his biceps and falls completely in love with him 4. Abdul tells Trump if he signs the bill we can call it Trumpcare. Like Obamacare but better and he can take the credit for it. Statues built in his honor 5. Trump says okeyy Abdool I’ll do it hehe

Have you ever worked on a winning election? Or an election in general since you failed the nation in 2016 & couldn’t find the rust belt on a map? Truly the most useless voice in the Democratic Party who’s a shill for the donors dumb enough to pay attention to a washed up has been (if she ever even was)
What happened with Osborn? We all just memory holing that race now?

Breaking my twitter fast to say why you should ignore all (yes all) Quantitative Hot Takes on the "progressives vs. moderates" question 1) Confounding 2) SUTVA/spillovers 3) Measurement of moderation Use qualitative thinking here and accept uncertainty
I would like to see someone take a look at what happens to “progressive” vs “moderate” electoral performance when controlling for same- or opposite-party control of the state government (maybe someone has and I haven’t seen it) MN in particular makes me wonder about this: Flanagan has been held up as a major progressive underperformer, but Klobuchar also underperformed the national shift by ~4pp (and only did about ~2pp better than Flanagan—not nothing, but not gigantic). MI has a similar story, FWIW; Dems up and down the ticket mostly didn’t put up the kind of colossal shifts that we saw across the South—including the moderates. There’s an obvious plausible explanation—Walz was a drag for MN Dems, and in a general anti-incumbent environment, being the state party in power attenuated some of the anti-federal-incumbency energy against the GOP. And just broadly, the biggest shifts we saw were in places like Texas, Mississippi, South Carolina, Kansas—places where the GOP has been deeply entrenched for a long time. All of which is to say, because progressives are more likely to run in and win primaries in already-blue states (and moderates disproportionately likely to run in red districts) it seems to be that there could be a confounding factor in progressive “underperformance” in the form of thermostatic reaction to whatever party is in power in a given state. Has anyone done an analysis looking at this specifically? @lxeagle17 @JakeMGrumbach
