Obama tonight on his Cheesecake Factory line: "They mobilized a whole of government response to that joke. Not to inflation, but to that joke. The White House even called the Secretary of the Treasury. This is the man who is in charge of the economy. The person who's supposed to be figuring out how to make your life more affordable. The guy who's supposed to be figuring out how to lower inflation. And reduce interest rates. They told him he should hold a press conference in front of the Cheesecake Factory."

Lots of debate this week on whether journals should ban AI in peer review.
We actually tested this in our new preprint, and the results were pretty clear to me.
For context, I've reviewed for most of the big journals and evaluated 1,000 human reviews as an editor. I love to read and evaluate science.
TLDR: From now on I won't do any peer review without AI. For clinical trials, I'd even call human-only review dangerous 🧵

Could Marine Le Pen, runaway favourite and twice convicted, still be banned from taking part in the French presidential election next April-May? A very senior, retired French judge has infuriated the Far Right leader by confirming what we at @EurasiaGroup said in July. Yes, Le Pen COULD still be banned - in two circumstances. 1/

Important, but not unexpected, finding that experts working with AI agents are swayed by the positions of the AI, even if they think they are working independently.
If your independent judgement matters on a task, you need to be deliberate about when in the process to use AI.

The agent was told to make the best honest case for its options, but to change its mind if the evidence required it, and never to mislead the analysts.
Analysts went with the agent's lean 86% of the time. If the agent's lean had no effect, we'd expect this to be 50%.

New Zealand: remote South Pacific location, food surplus, low strategic value.
Iceland: top Global Peace Index, isolated island, renewable energy and fishing.
Switzerland: long neutrality, Alpine terrain, extensive nuclear bunkers.
Argentina: vast agriculture, Southern Hemisphere distance from major powers.
Chile: Andes and Pacific barriers, minerals and food self-sufficiency.

Meta had an internal PR plan to try and discredit Jon Haidt because he was a critic of social media.
Meta was going to recruit academics, like Andrew Gelman, to write take down pieces. They were trying to turn academics against one another through a "whisper strategy".
This is a very serious problem for open academic debate. If academics who share negative evidence about a platform are targeted by campaigns to smear our credibility, we are in deep, deep trouble.
This creates a very serious conflict of interest for anyone who is paid to do this.
