“The situation has never been so serious; the Fifth Republic is on the verge of collapse. My family has served France for centuries, and if France calls upon me, I will be at its service. The indispensable condition is that France desires the return of the monarchy - a monarchy above parties, unifying.” - Luís de Bourbon, direct descendant of Saint Louis IX

If a great Irish writer’s books can no longer be published in the UK because she stands with Palestine, the question isn’t what law might Sally Rooney have broken, it’s what sort of country has Britain become. irishtimes.com/culture/books…

This was a great one - I had a physical reaction to @MatthewSitman’s line “the organic intellectual is someone that does their own research.”

An accompanying piece to my Odd Lots episode. It's not just about the technicalities of comparing living standards: the obsession with relative decline and 'competitiveness' is a form of declinism: "the unwitting last refuge of great power delusions." 🧵 phenomenalworld.org/analysis…

Remember when neoliberal econs told us in the post-Covid period that companies were NOT taking advantage of inflation to raise their own prices in excess of any cost increase? They also told us that industry concentration didn't explain post-Covid price hikes. Well, economists at Northeastern University tested that proposition and found good evidence for this practice--what non-econs might call "gouging" or "profiteering"--in the airline industry. Go give it a read! (link in next tweet)

New from the New York Fed: "By February 2026, tariffs had contributed 2.9 pp to goods price inflation, and without them goods prices would have fallen slightly." About one quarter of every point in higher tariff rates shows up in consumer prices within one year. • A 10% across-the-board tariff yields a 2.6% rise in consumer goods prices after one year. • About two thirds of the increase comes from pricier imports, which get passed through quickly. • Another third comes from U.S. made goods, as producers face higher input costs and less import competition. This takes longer, about 6-12 months, to filter through.
