Sixteen women who converted to Islam in Spain have filed a complaint accusing Samir Azzam, president of the Islamic Association of Vigo in Galicia, of “patriarchal attitudes” and pressuring Muslim women over wearing the hijab.
The dispute erupted after Azzam shared a video of girls wearing hijabs in a WhatsApp group for new Muslim converts and said the hijab becomes obligatory for Muslim women after puberty, with failure to wear it constituting disobedience of a religious requirement and a sin.
Several women challenged his message. Three women were eventually expelled from the WhatsApp group, while another 13 left voluntarily in solidarity with them.
