“On the other hand, there is reason to believe that the first pot of jam was mysteriously discovered by a child. His parents only learned of the event once the pot was empty — of course.” —Erik Satie

lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v48/n14/… Gorgeous read on cyanotypes this morning from @LRB. At once an on-the-ground history of the race to invent photography, an evocation of the omnivorous lives of 19th c naturalists, a record of personal obsession, & the story of a father and daughter

“Why, you may be wondering, was this long whine ever written down? It’s not a memoir, not an argument—what is it, anyway? The first draft—very much shorter and even more purple—was a suicide note”

Wonderful
Saudi Aramco is perhaps best known as the rapacious national oil company of Saudi Arabia, but since 1949, its U.S. subsidiary has also published an unusual print magazine—a free periodical that, as Krithika Varagur (@krithikavaragur) writes, blends “the recondite trivia of an almanac with the effortful style of the classical general-interest magazine, like Life.” theparisreview.org/blog/2026…

Fernanda Melchor's Hurricane Season is a modern masterpiece.
i'll stick my neck out for fernanda melchor and missouri williams (older and younger ends of the millennial spectrum, respectively; both under 45). gen z is just about hitting the main publishing age. if we're talking about living writers, there are clearly many greats.

Lovely. Tribute to a friendship, working in publishing in the late 90s / aughts, and talking about books for way longer than you're supposed to. Of course Silverblatt was a Szymborska fan

"Fidel" sent this photo saying we are covering the grapevines in Delano CA with plastic as it's supposed to rain later. The plastic helps protect these late season grapes from rot and mold that can damage the fruit. #WeFeedYou

“If I write better German than most writers of my generation, it is thanks largely to twenty years’ observance of one little rule: never use the word ‘I’ except in letters.” — Walter Benjamin, from “A Berlin Chronicle”
