🚨🚨 talk drop 🚨🚨 - state of the software factory, live at @AgenticAIFdn in Amsterdam last week
don’t be the last one
youtu.be/ix1qQK1IvmA?is=dmS0…
You can’t put an agent in jail, so a human has to own what it does. @joshalbrecht (@imbue_ai), @jgreze (@TownAI), and @dexhorthy (@humanlayer_dev) on who owns the agent. Moderated by @clairevo (@cxodev) at init().
init(): Dexter Horthy, Jean-Denis Greze, Josh Albrecht, Claire Vo

there was a titling issue here, but this is our long awaited software factories "debate" w/ the legendary @zachlloydtweets
(debate - turns out we are pretty aligned)

AI can write your code, but who's cleaning up the mess?
@dexhorthy breaks down why passing tests doesn't mean maintainable code.
Catch him at AGNTCon + MCPCon North America, Oct 22–23 in San Jose.
It's not too late to register: bit.ly/4lT6ZJM
livestream alert - today at 10:15a PT - super stoked to be chatting software factories with @zachlloydtweets , creator of the warp terminal, warp agent, and now warp factories.
I think we agree on a lot of things but there will probably be some spicy debate too. Shouts out to @vaibcode for stepping in to moderate 🙂
live on X at 10:15PT today, edit goes up on youtube ~Friday afternoon
the same thing that has always been true of engineering is still true. Slow down, prioritize well, do less in parallel, elevate getting things #1/2 done over maximizing utilization of your overall attention (even if it means some downtime for you)
the sign tapping will continue xitter.cf/dexhorthy/status/21056…
great post from @exedev team - the same thing that has always been true of software engineering is still true:
Do fewer things in parallel, do them very well, optimize for getting incremental value out to users, FOCUS
It's been 30 years since the XP and Lean folks said "limit work in progress (50+ if you count the eli goldratt thing) - its still true

I’ve seen a lot of people dunking on @thdxr and @opencode, and I needed to say something.
Frankly, I don’t think anyone understands how sophisticated these attacks are. These aren't script kiddies doing this after school. These are state actors, with real companies fueling the fire.
One of the bigger companies behind distillation has 4 office locations worldwide, and there are a number of companies that are entirely fronts for distillation.
You’ve probably seen their ads. Some have raised venture. I’ve personally seen messages claiming they bought over $5 million in inference for distillation.
They’ve gone so far as to recruit people close to the model labs for better access, and the dollars flowing through the distillation ecosystem are in the 9 figures. These attacks offer a huge economic incentive.
These aren't fly-by-night operations. At Vectoral we've see relays offering affiliate programs, net 30 invoicing for enterprises, and strict SLAs. Together, the top relays get tens of millions of visitors per month.
Frankly, they are more sophisticated than most SAAS companies.
The sad reality is that things likely only get worse from here. We are at war for global AI hegemony.

Late to the party here, but @dexhorthy's /show-me skill is awesome.
It gives a short, token-efficient overview of the changes in a pseudo-code format. Quick to generate and easily embedded in a PR description.
It's composable too. Want more on InboxView? /show-me the InboxView. Want more on the preview batching mechanism? /show-me the preview cache

ALT A PR summary for a new inbox view beside the sidebar folder tree. The inbox lists every Markdown File and HTML App, newest modified first, grouped by date like Apple Notes. Each row shows the note's first two lines and its folder. A component-tree diff adds a folders/inbox toggle, ⌘⇧E and ⌘⇧I shortcuts, InboxView, memoized InboxRows, and LiveText for the open note. A second block shows previews loading from the main process in batches of 200, reading the first 4 KB of each file. Only changed rows re-render.

Why did code quality matter in the first place?
@mkanat brings it back to two questions: what does the system actually do, and how do you change it safely?
57 seconds from AI Engineer New York.
Before you accept the next AI generated change, can you answer both?

I heard some early murmurs about this and very excited to check it out. If nothing else Jake is a man of craft and taste
Ok can finally talk about what I’ve been working on at Reflection. Introducing Mirror, our own open source coding agent optimized for Beam.
I started the mirror project when I first joined Reflection, and it has gone through many iterations since then.
Install it today with: uv tool install reflection-mirror

this is a cool post but also I’m dying cause our producer used the same background music in the @humanlayer_dev June demo vid youtu.be/KQoSiBbsVso?t=77&is…
As the world’s largest alternative asset manager, @Blackstone requires the highest standards of deployment flexibility and governance.
Factory made it possible to operate agentic software development within Blackstone’s own data centers without compromising model choice or workflows.
