Ha ha ha let’s talk more about the cheesecake factory and Trump’s latest campaign strategies with the funny and eloquent @BarackObama
Former President Barack Obama responds to President Trump criticizing his comparison of Trump's Oval Office decor to The Cheesecake Factory: "I am not making this up. He is literally doing arts and crafts while we are fighting a war and trying to deal with out-of-control prices."

During my meeting with King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, I spoke about the lives of our people under constant Russian attacks and our diplomatic efforts with partners to achieve peace. I thank His Majesty for his support and for the meeting. The Netherlands is one of Ukraine’s closest and most reliable partners. We value all the assistance provided. It is important that we can be confident that support for our people will continue. @koninklijkhuis

DRAMA IN ISRAEL: Israel's exit polls, which are usually very accurate, are out, and all agree that Netanyahu's Likud party is the largest. Eisenkot's party looks to have failed to become the largest, giving Netanyahu a clear basis to claim the right to form a coalition. There are only two options here: a Netanyahu–Eisenkot-led unity coalition, or Netanyahu staying on as PM until another election in the spring. There is no prospect of a “change coalition”. Lieberman won’t swallow the compromises needed for a unity coalition. Neither will Yair Golan. But then Lieberman won't sit with the Arab parties. So it's going to be up to Yair Lapid, Bennet and Eisenkot to try and pry Netanyahu away from the far-right. Winter's party, with Yosef Haddad, failed to make the threshold.

In Matmata, Tunisia, people have lived in underground homes for hundreds of years, with rooms carved into deep pits and connected by tunnels.

The first woman in the history of the National Guard to receive Ukraine’s highest honor. “Surrender!” The russians were shouting her callsign outside a destroyed dugout near Spirne. Inside, Oleksandra Davydenko was concussed and suffering from chemical gas exposure. Two wounded comrades lay beside her. She refused to surrender. For two days, they remained beneath the rubble with little water and no communication. During the night of March 13–14, she and a comrade dug out the entrance. Two russian soldiers opened fire as she emerged. She killed both, contacted headquarters, and led her wounded comrades to a Ukrainian position. Both survived. Before joining the National Guard, Oleksandra was a radio journalist in Zaporizhzhia. In March 2026, she became the first woman in the Guard to receive the title Hero of Ukraine. When explaining her actions, she said: “I was the one who led them into that position, and I had to be the one to bring them out.” Read the full story on my Substack and subscribe: romansheremeta.substack.com/…

Scientists have identified a reversal of the long-standing Flynn effect—the roughly 200-year trend of rising average intelligence (measured via IQ and cognitive tests) across generations. For the first time in modern recorded history, Generation Z (born roughly 1997–2012) shows lower performance than previous generations in key cognitive domains, including attention, memory, literacy, numeracy, executive function, problem-solving, and general IQ—despite spending more years in formal education than ever before. Neuroscientist and educator Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath, PhD, MEd, testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation on January 15, 2026, highlighting this shift. In his written testimony, he stated that cognitive development in children across much of the developed world has stalled or reversed over the past two decades, with declines evident in international assessments (e.g., PISA, TIMSS) and other large-scale data starting around the mid-2000s and accelerating post-2010. Horvath attributes the primary driver not to reduced schooling, but to the widespread integration of digital screens and educational technology (EdTech) in classrooms. He argues that human brains evolved for deep, focused learning through face-to-face interaction and sustained attention, not fragmented skimming or constant task-switching encouraged by devices. Key points from his testimony include: - Teens now spend over half their waking hours on screens, with significant portions in school involving computers or tablets—often leading to off-task behavior and shallower processing. - Evidence from meta-analyses and national/international studies shows a consistent pattern: higher classroom screen exposure correlates with weaker outcomes in reading, math, science, and higher-order reasoning. - Digital tools may aid narrow, repetitive skill practice in controlled settings, but in core academic contexts, they tend to reduce depth of understanding, retention, and critical thinking. Horvath describes this as a "structural mismatch" between human cognition and how digital platforms are designed (to capture and fragment attention), warning that unchecked EdTech adoption risks long-term harm to workforce skills, innovation, and societal reasoning. The Nazi guards never heard the baby crying inside her toolbox. If they had, 2,500 children would have died. In 1942, a 32-year-old Polish social worker named Irena Sendler walked into the Warsaw Ghetto carrying a simple toolbox. She had a permit to check for typhus outbreaks. The guards waved her through. Hidden beneath the wrenches and rags was a six-month-old baby. She walked past armed soldiers and handed the child to a Polish family waiting outside the walls. The next morning she walked back in and did it again. For three years Irena smuggled approximately 2,500 Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto. She hid infants in toolboxes, sedated children and smuggled them in coffins, concealed them in ambulances under stretchers, and used sewer pipes. Every child received a new Polish name. Irena recorded everything—real names, new names, locations—on tissue paper sealed in glass jars and buried in a friend’s garden. By October 1943 the Gestapo caught her. They tortured her, broke both her legs and both her feet, and beat her unconscious. She gave them nothing. After months they sentenced her to death. The night before her execution, the underground bribed a guard. He led her out and recorded her as “executed.” She went immediately back to work and continued until the war ended. When the war ended she dug up the jars and spent months trying to reunite children with families. Most parents had died in the camps. For decades almost no one knew about her. Then in 1999 four teenage girls in Kansas found a brief mention of a woman who had saved 2,500 children. They researched and wrote a play. At age 89 Irena Sendler became famous. She was honored by Pope John Paul II and nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. She died in 2008 at age 98. One estimate suggests those 2,500 rescued children produced approximately 6,000 descendants. She was a social worker with a permit and a toolbox. She walked into hell every day for three years and walked out carrying children. The Nazis broke her legs. They couldn’t break her will.
