This Huawei MateBook Fold feels impossibly futuristic. A 18" screen when fully unfolded, folds down to the size of a magazine, and even runs a Linux-derived OS. But we clearly need to get @omarchy running on this!

Looks awesome - but would take some time for me to get used to the keyboard. Or maybe I should just start embracing dictation ..

Yeah, I wouldn't think of it as a traditional laptop replacement. More like a foldable tablet that also turns into a cinema display!

But they have transitioned from x86 to arm. and @omarchy runs on x86 only

Omarchy will run ARM in five minutes.

This device is basically my dream device. DP-in (can be used as a portable monitor for my SFF PC), the wireless keyboard, and ideally Linux on it. The closest to this is the ASUS Zenbook Duo, which I'm dual booting Omarchy and Windows (for now).

From my tests their OS is not Linux, I believe that even their chip architecture is custom (kirin ?). It really felt like alien technology, and unfortunately I couldn't access a bios or boot on a flash drive

That would be awesome - I think the Chinese make some amazing hardware, but their software has always been terrible - locked down, limited flexbility - having omarchy on it would be a huge improvement.

This could be so fun if it just gets stepped back from the “we have macOS at home” aesthetic … you boys get Omarchy running on this with full hw support I might just get one …

Modern HarmonyOS is a major departure from Linux. It's set up with the HongMeng microkernel.

I can't believe a well-known developer like you still don't know OpenHarmony, Hongmeng and Oniro exist and you still call HarmonyOS PC as Linux-derived OS 😂🤣. I am not a developer like you but I know HarmonyOS PC is not based on Linux.

wait the folded size math is kind of perfect 18 inch at 4 by 3 is 14.4 by 10.8, fold it and each half is 10.8 by 7.2 which is a 3 by 2 panel with a 12.98 inch diagonal, so huawei calling it two 13s is basically exact and linux derived is half right lol its their hongmeng microkernel, but the osdi 24 paper says it reuses 700+ unmodified linux drivers inside a driver container

I know a guy who can make that happen ha ha

The screen folds, the keyboard disappears, and Linux is still the part you think needs fixing.

18-inch fold that runs Linux-derived OS is the laptop form factor argument ending

I dont know what I'm looking at. What sorcery is this? Is that two screens? One where the keyboard should be?

What is the problem this laptop solves? Cos I can see at least a few it creates. 😉

and on Huawei phones if HarmonyOS doesn't go global soon; time to put @HuaweiMobile hardware back where it belongs

When I get some time I'm going to try and get Omarchy running on the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i.

18 inch screen that folds into a magazine and the first thought is putting Linux on it, peak dhh how's the battery with the screen fully open
138
@grok could this computer feasibly run Omarchy?

I never buy a foldable screen notebook again. (Have a Lenovo) - it’s really not usable in your daily business. Just the showcase is nice

i'm moving to omarchy tomorrow, praying it works well with asus rog strix 4k monitor. i've had issues with monitors whilst using linux in the past.

I'm so looking forward to the day that these are more mainstream and reasonably priced. Quite a premium on them today for a niche device.

Hardware is much better than its own built software

18 inches that folds into a magazine and the first thought is getting Omarchy on it. Respect

Omarchy on a device like this would be great. I had already been hoping for Linux support when the Asus Zenbook Duo came out.

Is the demo cooler than what it like to live with?

I always thought the table touch screen keyboard in Tron legacy was so legit looking but not sure what the typing experience would actually be like…saying that a 3D printed stand and a small Bluetooth keyboard would mean you could travel with an ultra wide setup if it opens wide

This would be a sick device for Omarchy 👌🏼💯
63
I like your work, but I’m never gonna buy chinese hardware. Not in a million years
64
Looks definitely cool, but how is the typing on the software keyboard where you don’t feel the keys? I remember similar laptops from back in 2011, but they never really caught on. Would be cool if they solved the keyboard issue.
152
yo what's going om with hand in last pic. Is that person alright? might be camera angle

There’s no way that keyboard is even remotely tolerable unless you are a hunt-and-peck typist.
